What do you mean??? The entire dash board panel, or certain parts of it? There really isn't an alternative for the entire panel, and you can only replace it with a new one. You can paint it white, if you like. Some people have done this.

Oh, you mean cluster/gauges. You can buy either reverse (like on my pics below) or glow ones either on Ebay or www.procarparts.com . I have a DX model with out tachometer, and this is what it looks like:
DAY:

NIGHT:

As for the how-to on the cluster removal, you might want to check out THIS thread on www.clubprotege.com . You will get help much faster on that forum, since most 2nd gen owners are there. I could help you out, but I am in school, and I do not have my files with me when istalled my gauges.

I was looking into this and I don't understand what this is saying: "1998 MAZDA PROTEGE E-REVERSE GAUGES - INCLUDES 2-COLOR BLUE/GREEN INVERTER SWITCH -NUMBERS & MARKINGS WILL GLOW AT NIGHT 4 TOTAL COLORS-RED,LIGHTGREEN,BLUE,HYPERBLUE -SCRATCH RESISTANT,ANTI-GLARE SURFACE"

Any insight?

98LX - The ones you are describing are what I have on my car. They look silver during the day, but at night only the marking light up. Its also true that you can adjust the color but it only looks good when you have on blue, like on pics above.

yup, needles are the same....the gauges are just a thin overlay that sits over your factory gauges.
Familiase, since your in New Zealand, you can buy them there....any for a 99+ up will fit!

So the 99+ ones will fit a 1998 model w/tach? Also, how easy are they to install?

If you do not have a tachometer, its a piece of cake. But if you do have a tachometer, you will have to make two cuts in the one that goes over the fuel/temp gauges. Many people learned that the hard way, and broke those needles. There was a tutorial recently on clubprotege by KDawgONE, I think. PM him, and he would more then glad to help out.
