I think my transmissions toast. I have been screwing up my 1st gear downshifts a lot during the last part of this season and on friday I shifted to second and there was a huge grinding noise (even thought the clutch was down and I shifted at low RPMs) and then a big "CHUNK!". Then immediatly it started knocking. The knocking goes with the speed of the wheels not the RPMs.

Yesterday night when I came off the highway and got stopped at the traffick lights I had no 1st or 2nd when I tried to drive away. I pulled off in 3rd and then I was for some reason able to downshift. So now I have all my gears and Im planning to swap the tranny myself but I need to find one used.

So what transmissions will bolt up to the 2000 model 1.6L engine? Mx3 1.6L? I dont know much about what actually is interchangeable on Mazdas yet as my Protege is my first car after defecting from VWs.

 

F Series gearbox...it was on multiple cars...but check ebay...i see them all them time on there

 

Thanks! Yeah I checked on Protege Faq just now and apparently they use em on the 1.5L 2nd gen proteges as well! Found one at my local junk yard too!
