shifting in the cold

Today was the first time that it was below 40 degrees this year where I live. When I shifted into first, it felt like a grinding feeling. This has never happen before, and I wanted to know is this due to it being cold? It hardly ever gets this cold in New Orleans, and 40 degrees feels like 20 degrees in New Orleans.

If anyone knows why this may be happening, please tell me. Thank you.
