Just installed a tach

I just installed a tach. I noticed that the tranny shifts in the range between 1800 to 3000 rpm. Is this normal on an auto tranny? Can I do a simple mod to make the time in between gear shifts stretch longer? Eg: shift at higher rpm

the shifts range according to how much you press the gas pedal!
