I drive a 91 LX with a 5-spd. I've got a custom intake with adapter and cone filter, some mild ignition work, a full exhaust (header back), and a modded suspension and IMHO, my moms 03 MPV LX feels like it pulls harder than my protege.

I had a '97 CR-V auto, and I have to say it was pretty slow. I'm pretty sure you could take it. As a side note, that CR-V was my favorite car I've ever owned. I'm going to be trading in my wife's Saturn L200 for an '03 CR-V this fall. Need some kind of AWD vehicle now that I'll be living in the country.
