....lets not forget that the Mazdaspeed6 has plenty of power. Unforunately, it also has plenty of extra weight to carry around. That powertrain would likely be badass in a fwd car without all of the body add-ons, etc.
Way back in the sixties, performance cars were clean and simple, and often had very few options. In fact, "delete" options (i.e. leaving the otherwise standard radio out at the factory in performance models) were commonplace. These days, serious no-frills performance cars with the bare minimum of gadgetry are few and far between. The Evo MR and the dearly departed Neon ACR are the only notable exceptions that I can think of.

exactly. After riding in Wagners EvoRS I can honestly say that not having a radio or power windows is no biggee....trust me you spend very little time in an EvoRS listening to anything other than the engine!

stick with whatever your stock engine is. Have the internals replaced with forged/lightened pieces. Invest in a good standalone EMS like the AEM or Haltech E6X tocontrol everything. Upgrade your fuel system, source a manual tranny and buy a high performance clutch and flywheel. Pick out a good turbo kit with a properly sized turbo and decent FMIC.
And when you're done let me know where your money tree is planted so I can sit under it sometime.

wow....talk aabout putting the cart before the horse.
I'm sorry man, I'm going to come off as a jerk here but it has to be said..... you dont know what you want or what you're asking for. It seems like the first thing you need to buy is a clue. Once you know a little more about cars and the prices things actually cost you'll quickly realize why no'one has done this.
In all honesty for HALF what you'd spend doing this swap you could buy a very fast beater and save yourself time and money....use the protege as a daily driver while you piddle money on the beater.....

at least you can admit your newbness without getting all irrate.
You're "want list" of mods there will easily set you back $7K+
If you plan on getting serious about building this car you need to form a budget and masterplan of what you want your end product to look/perform like. Once you make this list you should start shopping for prices....then add it up.. Take that total multiply it by 1.25 and save up that much money.
Once you get that much saved up then take a SERIOUS look at your car and say "do I really want to put this much money in this car or possibly buy a new car thats out now with it."
If you do this. I bet you'll never put that money into your protege.

...here is a good place to start. I don't know what engine you've got, and I am too lazy to do a search on your ride. This is easier for the 2.0L than it is for the smaller displacement engines, as the smaller displacement engines do not have as much aftermarket support. For all 1.6L concerns, you are lucky enough to have experts like Macdaddyslomo to help answer your questions. For 2.0L, this is what I would do if I were you:
1) e-bay intake
2) Header
3) Catless DP for Wagner shorty (not necessary if you get a long tube header)
4) MIL eliminator (for #3)
5) UR underdrive pulley
6) Low restriction exhuast (e-bay catback?)
7) Mazdaspeed/ JDM cams (intake and exhaust)
8) Lightened flywheel
That ought to keep you busy for a while, and your car would post a pretty decent gain.
