P5 vs. Neon

A friend of mine just moved in with his cousin, who has a 2000 Neon with exhaust and a computer chip. I don't know how much hp the exhaust got him, but the chip got him 35 fwhp. Total, his car has 185 fwhp (showed me the dyno chart).

Naturally he wanted to race (not to show off, just to see what a P5 does with minimal mods). So we pull out onto a deserted road, where a cop has literally never set foot nor tire. I guess he was in a hurry to race or somehing because instead of the normal 3.....2.....1.....GO! he goes 321GO! really fast. I wasn't expecting him to say it that fast so I wasn't quite ready. He launches before I do and backs off a little to let me catch up then stomps it. He pulled away a little bit up to 90mph, beating me by about a car length (maybe a little bit more). Yes, I lost, but his car has 185hpand mine has 140hp at the most. Not bad if you ask me. Plus, I wasn't even power shifting. Just the regular ole fast-action slappin at 6,500rpm. And, I wasn't able to launch at as high as RPM as I would've liked because he rushed the damn countdown.

What kind of chip got him an additional 35hp on the stock Neon RT engine?

It isn't an R/T engine. It's the model of Neon that has all R/T stuff except the engine in the plain jane Neon engine. The chip is made by AMX or something like that...

his dyno chart was . Even the R/T engine with a 35hp boost from a chip wouldn't dyno at 185. There is driveline and transmission loss so it would dyno at maybe 155 or so. Besides, his car is lighter than yours and would win with even the same amount of horsepower. At 155 at the wheels he would SMOKE your ***!

When you shift without taking your foot off the gas.
It has its advantages.

Definitely NOT SMART in my opinion... I've seen a lot of guys trash their transmission that way.

There was no R/T package in 2000. So there was no R/T "stuff".

The only engine available in 2000 was the 132hp SOHC. The exhaust will give it up to about 5hp. The chip is actually the entire cpu. I'm assuming it's the AFX unit which will give maybe 6-8 hp. For a total of 145hp max. That would be around 110 on the dyno.

The only way you can get 185 fwhp would be to turbo the engine.

Only one engine I know can get up to 30hp from just a chip, and that's the VW/Audi 1.8t motor. Turbo engines typically benefit the most from a simple chip.

I haven't researched SOHC Neon motors as much as I would like, but I'd still bet that a 35hp chip is nonsense.

It's normally used when a car has a close ratio gear transmission. Or if you install a short shifter. Other than that, I wouldn't try it cause the RPM's will rev to high and bounce of the rev limiter cause the gear change wouldn't be fast enough

I agree, a base Neon only has 132hp. There's no way you can get 185hp (to the wheels) from that car without force induction.

Honestly, I don't know for sure anything about his car, except that is pretty damn fast, even with a huge sound system in the trunk.

Now he has a completely stripped '96 Neon with a 2.0L...that thing is FAST!

Hey "SWEETPROTEGE93" how did it go from not knowing what powershifting is, too were you've seen a lot of guys trash their transmissions that way.
