Was This A Joke?

So, I'm at a light (Country Hills Blvd, And Shaganappi Trail, I was heading West on Country for those from Calgary...) Anyway, this kid about my age (17) rolls up next to me with one of his buddies in what I think was his Mom's 2002 GMC Envoy. I usually just tap my gas at some lights cause I like the sound of my car, and next thing I knew, he revved his engine, while looking at me. I looked over and he nodded. I saw the other light turn yellow, and set myself up for the launch. 2500 RPM, and just hold her. Well, it went green and we were both off. I have to admit, that damn thing with the 275hp Inline six, is a quick little truck, but still. Anyway, it was actually quite in my favor through first and second gear, but as soon as I hit 3rd, that damn guy started to really pull on me! I hit the flashers right away, and turned off at the next light.

I know my car is slow, but an ENVOY???!!! Man, I need more power! (Insert Tim Allen grunt here.) NOS ain't for me. Only babies use bottles.

Guess that's what I get for being a riceboy...

nightowl October-18th-2002 12:03 AM

hehe i'd like to see what would happen if you took a sharp turn and he tries to follow :D

P-diddy October-18th-2002 05:01 AM

Take the back seat outta that thing! You got a big system in the back or what? Maybe you could try that TORNADO, I've seen it on TV??? Anywayz, "It doesn't matter if you win by a inch or a mile....." somebody finish that for me..... LOL :D

Maxx Mazda October-18th-2002 10:59 AM

He he he... No, I don't have a system or anything overly heavy. I was running with one passenger and a full tank of gas at the time though. I suppose you're right. I did still win, but not by much that's for sure...

alcoholiday October-18th-2002 04:06 PM

i'm beginning to think a toyota echo could beat you.

itzkcatz October-18th-2002 05:39 PM

I'm not surprised. The new TrailBlazer does 0-60 just over 7secs. I read in either motor trend or car n driver. Thats a fast truck.

Mazdaboy42 October-19th-2002 02:04 PM

no offense to anyone, but y'all seem to be thinking trucks are all so slow, i personally had an 88 chevy C1500. and with that thing being 14 years old, packing a V6 with 167hp stock and only having Edelbrock headers and flowmaster exhaust (Lucky if i had anywhere close 190hp) I was running much faster than my stock pro5 is running now and it was much heavier. So I am personally not surprised that you got run by that envoy. Just spend some money and then you can rip in straigth lines or just enjoy the twisties.

Exactly. I never sleep on trucks. My friends Nissan Pathfinder runs circles around my car and the new Silverado is in the 7sec range also.

Maxx Mazda October-19th-2002 09:40 PM

I work at a Chevy dealership, and the 5.3L Silverados are fairly average in the performance department... The 3/4 ton's however (with the 8.1L) haul some major ass! And, don't even get me started on the 6.6 Turbo Diesel... ;)

Mazdaboy42 October-19th-2002 10:40 PM

Man I love my pro but I miss my truck, guys in HonDUHs constantly coming up on me and I would leave their asses and when they found out it wasn't a 350, they almost crapped their pants. Except when some fag would roll up at 50mph and expect me to run with them, i had a sport tuned automatic transmition that had to downshift like a mofo and they wanted me to run with the 5 speed hi reving import, and what pissed me off more was when we got to the next light they looked at me and listened to me rev and would turn off like scared little kids.

I hate rice

KpaBap October-21st-2002 10:29 PM

Speaking of trucks....

I was driving home last night and I stopped at this stop light about 300 feet away from my highway onramp. This Chevy S10 rolls up next to me and revs his pathetic engine. The exhaust sounded like a bad case of diarrhea... Anyway, I give him the thumbs up and when the light turned green I revved it to 4000 and quickly popped the clutch. Immediately, I gained about one car lenght and kept gaining on him. I'm going about 55 and here comes the on-ramp.... The truck gets in my lane behind me and tries to keep up but immediately he realized that that was a bad idea since I was still going about 50 and wasn't slowing down through the turn. (BTW, the on-ramp was one of those O-shaped ones where you go about 270-degrees around). As I was coming out of the on-ramp I see the truck far-far behind me just about 60 feet into the turn. I mash the bitch into third and take off. Soon enough I'm going about 85 and the truck is nowhere to be seen. HA! PWNED!

I hate trucks

redrims October-21st-2002 11:23 PM

Hey. I like trucks. Especially the S15 and Ranger.

itzkcatz October-22nd-2002 07:54 PM

those trucks suck have like a 2.8 or a 4.3 motor i would hope u beat them they only have like 175 hp in the 4.3 try racing a 350 chevy pickup thats a challange

KpaBap October-22nd-2002 09:42 PM

The point is, a truck is a truck and as such its owner should not try and pretend like it's made for speed. Also, I should HOPE that a 300+ HP gasoline engine truck can beat a 130 hp car...

Trucks may not be made for top speed, or handling, but I am afraid to tell you that many trucks can run the hell out of a straight line 1/4 mile, all i am asking is give credit where it is due. Trust me I know from experience

RODSCALIP5 October-23rd-2002 01:25 AM

Nos is the way to go...............................even with a turbo you probably would still be doing about 15 secs in a 1/4 mile, someone correct me if im wrong.

itzkcatz October-23rd-2002 03:01 PM

dude my 350 dump truck would prob beat my car thats like 5000 pounds dont race suv's or pickups or minivans ...Jon

I was just rereading this original post, and correct me if I am wrong. You say when you got in third he started to catch you so you hit the hazards right away. Was this to signify a win?? Not to big on what hitting your hazards does but that is what a friend told me. If this is true, how fast were you going and I doubt just getting into third you would have run a 1/4 mile, so how do you consider this a win? Like I said if I am wrong let me know, but I don't think you won that race.

KpaBap October-23rd-2002 10:15 PM

I was thinking the same thing... This is what all the riceboys do when I'm out driving my 1998 Nissan Maxima around. The thing can haul ass but it's an automatic so the starts mostly always suck. So the ricers get ahead about 2-3 car lengths but by that time my 190 HP V6 is at its sweet point and as I'm about to blow by them they flash their blinkers and leave....

Speaking of Maximas.... what a smooth engine... WOW!

What I meant was as soon as I hit 3rd gear, he started to pull on me - he didn't pass me. (Just like I said.) About midway through 3rd gear, I decided it was enough, and hit the tickers.

So you didn't beat him you just cut out early, there is no way you had run a quarter of a mile. Just cause you think it was enough doesn't give you a win, especially when the other guy is pulling on you. Next time take the loss, and be proud you ran with a vehicle that has over double the hp of you, you will earn a lot more respect for that.

I am not trying to be a punk bout this just making the point known that overall a lot of drivers out there try to pull this stunt and brag about it later on, which is just not right. Take the loss, and try to get faster that is all you can do.

Maxx Mazda October-24th-2002 11:16 AM

I wasn't bragging about anything! I just didn't feel safe doing close to 110Km/h down Country Hills (very police patrolled) in a 60 zone! Call it what you will, but as soon as I gave up, he kind of called it quits also and we both just slowed down ad drove normally until I turned off. Out of curiosity, how long is a 1/4 mile in city blocks? We only went through like 2 sets of lights, so I don't think it was the full distance as you pointed out...

Sorry if I came across as a punk, just pointing out the details, don't know much about city block distances since most differ from city to city, and where I normally run has big fields, not blocks. As far as speed what is that equivlant to in mph, do not know km/h. Cause according to motor trend I believe it was right around 90 mph that they ran the quarter mile in.

Sorry this got out of hand

neuromancer October-24th-2002 05:23 PM

All I know is don't try and race a 2003 MPV van. I got my ass handed to me by a soccer mom named Jim.

Inside joke. :)

Seriously I was surprised.

No worries man, just trying (like you) to get the facts straight. You didn't come across as a prick at all btw! :D

I, on the other hand have pissed numerous times on my friend and (as he so proclaims) "almighty" 1991 MPV. He thinks that since he has a V6 then he must have some ungodly power that no 4-cyl. can ever match. The sad part is he has about 150 hp in a 4000+lbs car while I have 130(+whatever the CAI adds) in a 2800 lbs car. Do the math. He even tries to race me in the twisties in his van but I always refuse because I don't want him to hurt himself or his car...

itzkcatz October-25th-2002 09:33 PM

Dont feel bad i got spanked by i think a Town and Country minivan of course i didnt think it was gonna take off like it did lol but still never underestimate ..Jon 93 lx

damaster October-25th-2002 11:14 PM

Sorry dude, but I personally think you didn't win the race. I wouldn't say you lost either because you just bailed out early. If he was pulling on you, its most likely he would've passed you because he was probably reaching his 275 HP peak.

On another note, I've beat a lot of cars on the road (Civics, Corollas, Celicas, Integras (non-VTECs), Z24s, Neons, etc.), but I once got taken by a new Honda Odyssey minivan. I was winning in 1st and 2nd gear but that thing starting taking off and passed me by the time I had hit 3rd gear. I was shocked and researched as soon as I got home to discover that the Odyssey has an 8 second flat 0-60, that's over a second less than the 2.0L Pros!

The race I'm most proud of was against a Honda Del Sol. We were head to head until about 120 km/h when my Pro started gradually pulling away and I was still in 4th. I hit 140 km/h when the Del Sol was still at around 130, so I had passed by more than a car's length :)

Whatever you do, don't race Jetta 1.8T's, especially the new 180HP ones. Most Pros will take those cars in 1st because the 1st gear sucks on the 1.8T for some strange reason, but once that baby hits 2nd and the turbo kicks in, the Protege will be eating some serious Jetta ass! My friend has one and we've raced numerous times... I'd like to see how the Mazdaspeed fares against that thing.

Well one day I was driving my moms 2000 MPV to the airport and I crushed this late model Caravan that tried to race me. It was no contest.
