Pictures of Yakima Roof Rack on my MP5

Whats up. I know theres only 2 pics and theyre not great but theyre good if your thinking about etting a yakima roof rack. I took one whatever pic and one pic i thought would be important. The important pic is purposly "bigger" because i wanted you guys to know that there is a little gap with the 12V MightyMounts but they work the best and havent moved on me at all. I used MightyMounts 12V and Big PowederHound. I got all of it plus SKS Lock Cores Brand new for $112.00!!! it was 120 shipped(USD). It was the deal i posted a while back. Ok, well, here ya go people..

Looks wicked!!

This may be slightly related or unrelated, but my dad has a '98 MPV 4x4, and I was thinking of getting a ski-rack. My mazda dealer has one that is $150 bucks. Kinda expensive I think, is there cheaper costs for a ski rack? We've already got a roof rack, so just need the actual ski rack. Looking to hold maybe 1-2 pairs of skis, or 1 ski/ 1 snowboard.

Thanks...

That's pretty much what I've wanted to see, thanks for posting those picks. Now I just gotta get my hands on that US roof rack. The Canadian one cost big bucks.

If you want a US rack why dont you buy one online. Theres a lot of good places online where you can get a US rack shipped to cananda. Try therackwharehouse.com or rei.com

Also, markmurray77, the reason why i posted the picks is because this was exactly what i would have wanted to see before i got one. Just wanted to help everyone out. Peace...

gujustud , PM me if you have questions on good deals or whatever. Peace

Zacky - that rack looks pretty good. For all you Canadian P5 owners out there, here's the deal:

The rack the the Canadian dealers offer is a Mazda labelled Thule rack. No ifs ands or buts about it. It appears that the Thule/Mazda rack also uses the same mounting points as the US factory rack, so it is a pretty slick arrangement. If you like the Thule stuff but don't want to pay the big Mazda price, check what Thule has that may fit. However, I assume that the 'fit kit' that Thule has for the P5 on their website would be made to fit on the US factory rack, kind of like ZackyFarms did with his Yakima, rather than being a full rack that attaches to the car (I'm not sure about this though). The Thule/Mazda rack is locking and needs no tools to install/remove, plus you should be able to get a matching key for the rack and any attachments you buy for it from your local rack dealer.

Also, Mazda Canada did not have any of the attachments I wanted for the Thule rack when I bought mine, so I went to a local shop and got the Thule ski attachment for it. It works well and looks OK, but the rack itself is not quite as nice as the US rack as posted above. However I have the zippy aluminum finish ski attachment from Thule

Now for pricing - I couldn't find the price for the US rack, but I thought I read somewhere in one of the forums or elsewhere that the US factory rack goes for around $200US. By the time you factor in exchange, shipping, GST, duty, etc. etc. etc, then I really wonder how much more expensive the one that the Canadian dealers supply really will work out to be. I could be wrong, and I hope I am.

Now the flip side of this is if you hardcore bikers and boarders out there don't like the US factory rack and the attachments that you can get for it, I am sure that the Canadian dealers would be happy to sell you one of their racks so you can do a full on Thule rack/attachment combo. With the exchange rate working in the US guys' favor, it may be an option for some of you.

Anyway, just wanted to add my 2 cents, as I seem like the only one in Canada that actually shelled out for the rack that Mazda offers.

If I get a chance, I will try and post some pictures soon.

Dale.

Sorry for the long post, I got carried away.

Looks good Zacky! I like mine too. Haven't had a bit of trouble with them. I was just suprized that there was hardly ANY wind noise when driving with them on. A+++ For the Big PowerderHound!

Hey, im pretty sure that if you want a yakima bike rack then what you can do is get the Yakima MightyMount 12V and then buy the bike rack from yakima. I think the MightyMounts are in a sense "Universal" with Yakima Racks such as snowboard racks, ski racks, bike racks. I might be wrong but im pretty sure thats how it is.

Yea, i have the Bog PowderHound, it holds 6 skis or 4 snowboards(2 on top of 2). It doesnt hold a boke or anything, just a nice ski/board rack.

YAKIMA & THULE

Thank you thank you thank you zacky farm for posting pics! I've been looking all over for them.

Okay here's the deal...I've put some time into this...

Bikers:
Thule 889
It's a bike tray w/ half a crossbar...sits on top of our factory rack.
here's the deal...it's short. so if you are a biker, and strictly a biker you're golden. The 889 comes with 2 locks, also comes with skewers. You later can buy the 559 and have too trays.

To add a ski or board rack...take the 889 off. order the FM1 (universal adapter, thule's version of the Mighty mount), then buy the board rack.

Yakima:
Doesn't directly make anything for us. For skis/boards like zacky farm said MightMounts work fine. The one's from a 96 subaru legacy outback works too...I think they are the 24's, but don't quote me. IF you like to mount your bike w/ both tires on, just get the horizontal mighty mounts. 12H. Then get the anklebiter, or...the boa I think. The fork mounts take a little more work...you can make the copperhead fit...but it takes some adjusting.

ZACKY FARM...Does having your rack on reduce factory noise at all?

Oh yeah...YAkima also makes rack bases that fit into rails...kinda like the rails we have after we take our factory rack off. Tomorrow I will see if any of yakima's existing rail mount towers can fit in there. Hope this helps.

L8r,
SnObOaRdEr_X

HEY DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY PICS OF THE THULE/MAZDA FACTORY RACK SYSTEM that is available from the canadian dealer.
I was going to get a full on yakima setup, but I don't like the look of having the clips hang down from my roof. BTW if anyone else wants to get a full on set....Q towers, and Q102 clips.

glad the pics came in handy. btw, about Q-towers from Yakima, personally its a waste of a couple hundred dollars when you can go with a similar setup to mine(or the exact same way). Origonally iwas gonna get Q-towers but its a wast of money, just my opinion.

As for wind noice, it increases by like 500%. wind noise sucks with rack on, but then again what do u expect? its just a noise, i mean almost any rack you get will have some noise unless u get a deflactor which i also think is a waste of $$$. Im all about the way it functions, it gets my friends and my snowboards to the top of the mountain and back so its great!

on another note, has anyone elses stock rack started to fall apart? mine is, its in no was related to the yakina roof rack but i think it might be because i constantly take my roof rack on and off cuz on weekends i go boarding, and weekdays i take the whole rack off. read my post in the P5 FOrum...
