WTB: 2001 MP3 Protege ECU

Like the title says I am looking for a working in good condition ECU from an MP3. It has to be from the manual transmission MP3 model Protege, they only made the MP3's in 2001 so if its not a 2001 its not an MP3. The numbers on the ECU should be one of these numbers:

FS9N-18-881
FS9N-18-881B
FS9N-18-881C

Let me know if you have one or could possibly get one(from junkyard, friend, parts store, etc.). I would also be willing to give you my ECU. Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Dan

funny this thread pops up now..... I'm in the process of ordering an OE ecu re-flasher for mazda, honda, toyota/scion. It would allow me to take the stock maps from MP3/MSP ecu's and flash them onto other stock ecu's.

I was just debating myself to see if this was something that would make me money or cost me money.

How much is an MP3 ecu worth to you??

Rod! Dude! Do this!

I would pay $100 shipped total. Assumes a no more than 1 week total turn-around time.

WooHoo!

So you could flash my 2003 Mazda Protege5 ECU to a 2001 Mazda MP3 Protege ECU??

If thats the case I would give $50-$100. Let me know if that sounds fair. I would really be interested in this. Let me know when you will be getting the OE ecu re-flasher.

yeah, I was figuring $100 a pop would do it and I'd be able to do ANY OE flash no problems however I'm looking into the software to see if it has edit features as well. My underhood rep is supposed to be getting me detailed info on this as we speak.

It's a $1200+ investment for me so I'd need to line up a few more people upfront that want it done. If I got 10-12 people who would be willing to put a deposit down upfront I'd go ahead and buy the hardware and go grab the maps for the mp3/msp ecu's and have them on file.

This would allow someone with a standard protege (even mp3) to turbo their car with a STOCK msp tune which would mean NO issues with idling or driveability. No more buying junkyard ecu's or fmu's and voltage clamps. An FMU+VC costs $400+ for a quality unit and STILL has tuning issues and drivability concerns.

wait....lemme see what's involved first. I made need to have a 3rd gen protege on hand to do this....swap ecu's, then go through the OBDII port. Without the OBDII port I have no way of connecting to the ecu.

I'll have to look to see if I can find a local 3rd gen that will let me borrow their car randomly for re-flashing.

either way I think this will be a good idea. I'm going to source a tester car and both maps first before buying the hardware. I wish Phil had left his P5 with me when he shipped off so I could've just used it.

Hey Roddimus Prime. Deffinately put me down for an MP3 re-flash. We would just have to send you are ECU's right, we wouldn't have to drive are car to AL would we? Also I would feal a little nervous about sending you a $100 deposite before you even have the equipement needed to do the re-flash. Could we do a half now, half later kind of thing? Also how long does it take to do the re-flash? Was wondering how long I would be out of a car. I could overnight the ECU to you, would you be able to overnight them back??

here's what I suggest:

We'll keep this as a Gauging Interest thread. When we get 10-12 SERIOUS buyers down I will purchase the hardware upfront and THEN ask for a $50 deposit to help recover the cost of the hardware.

I will pay for everything uip front out of my own pocket before taking any money from anyone but I won't buy it until there is SOLID committment that I wont be throwing away $1200+.

Shipping can be done however you guys would like...if you want it overnight I can do that. If you want it cheapest possible I can do that also.

I'm still waiting on more info from my factory rep but I know for a fact that I can put mp3 and msp stock maps on 3rd gen protege ECU's with this hardware, no problem.

Don't get me wrong here, I thing this could be a great thing. I just want to make sure of what we are getting into here. Is this a direct plug-and-play? All we have to do is send you our ecu, you will reprogram it to be an mp3 ecu, and we just plug it back into our cars and go? Is there anything else we need to do to our engine to make them run properly? How much of a gain would I get if I did this on my mp5?

also, what the chances that I will get back a toasted ecu? I can't afford to buy a new one if something goes wrong.

1. I Trust Rod. He is one of maybe two poeple in the iUniverse that i trust. So sending full or partial is not an issue.

2. It is truly a PlugnPlay solution. I think the chance of a smoked ECU is nil. If it did happen- again, i would trust Rod to make it right. All you need to do is start using higher octane fuel. Just like an MP3.

3. Gain? I would expect 10-ish hp. Combined with my other mods - it should be quite noticable. The best $/hp gain for us.

the chance of a toasted ecu is 0%. When I worked for mitsubishi I was the only tech who could actually use their MUT tool to re-flash ecu's. there is honestly nothing involved with swapping maps. It just takes about 10 minutes.

Everything is simple swap. Just unplug the ecu, plug it back in. Nothing else to do.

A p5 with an mp3 ecu will probably see about 5whp or so but will also need to run 89-91 octane for this gain. The difference is the advanced timing. With a header, intake and cams you would see very decent gains. Remeber, air in, air burnt, air out is what makes power...intake and cams =air in, ecu=air burnt and header and exhaust = air out. They compliment each other. The gain of the ecu alone won't be as much as if you already have the other mods done and THEN put the ecu on.

yes, I will handle any ecu problems that come up...i dont see how this will ever be an issue though.

I am definitely in if the turn around time is acceptable to Canada.
