lighter hood

the protege already has a single level 2mm hood weighing in @ ~10lbs. how much lighter can the carbon fiber be? for the price, this is a very uneven tradeoff, especially since its another 200 bucks to get it painted correctly.

no ones bothered with carbon hoods for these, because they dont need them. carbon is for civics with their bi level reinforced hoods weighing in at ~16lbs.

1st gen

take a look at the construction, see at what point it begins a lower deck of steel (usually only 1mm sheetmetal) its usually 2/3 way in (a second deck only covers near the firewall in most cases.)

I'm sure the 1st gen hood was relatively heavy compared to the 2nd gen protege's. It is for Honda's and Toyota's of the time (the civics hood gained 4lbs between 2nd and 3rd gen, and the corolla probably gained some weight although I'm unsure)

carbon fiber hoods aren't really to save weight, they're solely for style. some people say its because 'you can get a custom air scoop or engine vents' but thats bs. Its FAR easier to cut the relatively thin sheetmetal making up a metal hood than it is to cut plastic, the problem is finding someone to actually cut the metal. I don't think home depot does that sorta stuff :\ When cutting a fabricated hood you have to be careful not to split it, and they're usually 3mm or so thick, although lighter of course because the fiber is less dense.
