Go to www.echofans.net and prepare to hear the most absurd statements in your life. Like an Echo with a modified suspension beat S2000s, Miatas, M3s, and the like.

This one is great:

you said your friend got a 97 z28 for 17k right? well, i bought my echo brand new for 10, with the extra 7k I just saved, i could out it into the car and have it spanking that camero and, true car enthusists will admire me more for having something as original as an echo outrunning the camero
Hmmm - an Echo spanking a Camaro (CamEro )? Whatever drugs this guy is doing, please pass some my way.

Suuuuuuure....car guys will admire you.

For probably 1000 dollars more that Camaro will be spanking that Echo again.

I loved the thread way in the back that said echoes were banned from auto-x because too many of them tipped over.

No matter what they do to that car, it still is not going to outhandle a similarly-equipped car like the Protege.

Let's say for example an Echo costs $10k, and a P5 costs $15k. If you turn them BOTH into $20k cars with mods, the P5 will spank the Echo all day long and most of the night, too.

It's just too damn tall and too damn narrow to ever be a real handler.

Oh - and those *concepts* are fuuuuugly. Just MHO.

Tru dat! I don't care what ANY Camaro, Mustang, Echo, Matrix, etc.....driver says - you CANNOT have a great handling car with a SOLID BEAM rear suspension!!!

Proud P5 owner - 4 wheel independent and LOVING it.

are you forgeting the wheal base on that car, it would kill a protege on in the slalom and on the autocross track , with two equivalent drivers and the same horsepower, especiall a p5 , with all that extra junk in the trunk

Can't take that lying down, my Bronx brotha. Here's some stuff to read:

From Edmunds.com:

......At the track, the Echo proved frightening during quick transitions in the 600-foot slalom and unsettling on the 200-foot skidpad. Its narrow width, tall seating position and excessive body lean sent chills up our road test editor's spine (something about the inside rear tire lifting off the ground). He did manage an unexpected .79 Gs on the skidpad, but the laggardly 55.9 mph slalom speed was representative of the Echo's twitchy nature.
I had a hard time finding some test numbers for the P5 - but I remember seeing in the charts in MotorTrend that the P5 pulled something like .82 on the skidpad, and almost 67 mph in the slalom.

Regardless, there's no way in hell that the Echo's wheelbase gives it any advantage. The P5 might be a dog in the motor, but Mazda put the money in the suspension. It's not an MazdaSpeed, but it's the same basic suspension geometry, and kicks ***, even in wagon form. The Echo is even worse in the engine (can you say 108 HP? Ugh!) and the suspension is just plain junk - Toyota spent the money on raising fuel economy and neato speedos.
