video compression? (digital camcorders, etc)

Can any of you with digital camcorders, or anyone who knows about transferring video to your computer... what settings do you use to keep the file sizes small, but still with decent quality? so far, i've only been able to get a video of 1 minute 30 seconds down to 15MB's. what codec's, compression settings, etc should i use? any help would be appreciated. :] i've got a few good videos i want to share.

DivX is going to be your best bet. There are several encoders. Check out http://www.divx.com. Otherwise AVI has pretty good compression. Stay away from MPEG-1. Its a space hog. Just remember the more compression you want the worse your quality. If you are going to be burning it to CD's anyway do MPEG-1 to a video cd format (NERO and some other burning packages can handle this, most DVD players and all computers with the software can read them).

Then definitely you want to use DivX. The files aren't nearly as huge as the other ones. If your software can't handle it do this. Use your software, save it as an MPEG-1, download a DivX encoder, encode the MPEG-1 file as a DivX file. DivX is kind of still gaining acceptance (its like MP3 for video) so your software probably doesn't support it. If it does it might call it MPEG-4.
