Under My Name?

Under My Name?
I took over car and insurance payments from my parents last month, but I'm wondering something. At the moment, I'm paying them directly for it. IF I get the car moved over to my name, I'm afraid my insurance will go up, but my folks want it under my name so that any tickets, etc. I get stay with me, not them. What should I do? My insurance is already $350 / month with a CLEAN RECORD! Any thoughts on what I should do?
And for those of you wondering, yes, I can afford the car and insurance just fine. And, since its now mine, I have free lisence to mod however I want!

hey nick. i had a problem when i was about 19. my crx was all under my name as well as the insurance, but the insurance was with the same company as my parents. I got a lot of big tickets doing 155-200 on highway 2. eventually i got a liscence suspension and as a result the company would no longer insure me, as well the hiked my parents insurance and they now face a 500,000 deductable if i'm caught driving their tribute, so just watchout with where you get insurance through cuz they can have strange policies. I'm not the only one I know with this problem, it has happened to a few peeps i know. I know this might not directly help your current stiuation, it's just a heads up.
well good look and happy hunting
p.s i don't know if you have traken any drivers ed or any defensive dring courses, but a couple hundred bills now can save a couple thousand bills in the future!

Not sure how the insurance works up there in Canada...but are you on the same insurance policy as your parents? or do you have a seperate policy just for you?
I KNOW here....and it could even vary from state to state and company to company.....
but with MY insurance....it made NO differecne in my daughters insurance rate whether the car was registered in HER name totally...or in mine, with her being on MY insurance policy....and in Texas....with the company I have....if there is a licenced driver living in your home....they are AUTOMATICALLY added to your policy unless you send them a writen letter specifically excluding them from your policy.
SO, Nick...what I would suggest you do....so that you have the 100% correct answer....would be to call up YOUR insurance agent and ask the specific questions for your province and your insurance company.....

From reviewing many contracts and terms over the past few years. There are some important pieces that are missing from your situation.
I really do not know how canadian contracts or agreements compare with US. But here are some highlights which will affect you in the states.
Your title will dictate on who needs to be responsible for insurance. If your parents and yourself are both on the title, then that means you both own value of that vehicle. This also means that if you are staying home, your parents can insure the vehicle for you under their insurance. If your title states that you own the vehicle and noone else has ownership but you, then you would need to get your own insurance. Your parents can not insure you under their insurance due to them not having ownership in the vehicle. You can pay for the insurance through your parents, but when you get into an accident, your insurance company will probably dick you. So getting your own insurance is a smart thing to do.
Considering that you are either 17 or 18 years old, you are considered as high liability due to the amount of driving experience that you may have. I know of an individual who is 30 years old with only 1 or 2 years of experience that pays 250USD per month for insurance.
What I would suggest that you do is to rereview your current insurance and see what coverage you have currently. I would up your deductible to see if that may reduce your premium. But expect to pay around your amount until you have a few more years under your belt.

I would suggest trying a few discount places. My advice is State Farm, I know for everyone that likes them there is someone who had a bad experience. But the problem is if you go with a broker, in their mind you are a punk *** kid with only one policy, you will get no help from them ever. They won't scout for better rates for you. They won't help in an accident. They will leave you hanging. You really want to find out what a company will offer long term. What discounts do you get after being with them for 2, 5, 10 years. Build a history with the company and you will be surprised how accomodating they are. Once you start adding second cars, tenant insurance, house insurance, you get to start dictating a few more things. I have been with state farm for 8 years now. If you have an accident they only raise your rate by 10% for three years then it goes back down. Tickets are similar. Your first claim is easy, no questions asked. They get sticky with the second and third.
Good Luck. One thing to remember insurance is all about give and take. You give they take. Try not to get too pissed about it. Everyone is pretty much in the same boat.
Stocker.

I had state farm insurance but they dropped me from having too many tickets. Now I use progressive. I pay $180 a month. I can't believe you pay that much with a clean record. Before State Farm dropped my I never had any problems with them, they paid for two wrecks and never gave any **** over it, but I hate them now that they dropped me. I guess thats my fault though!
