SUV/Truck mentality

is it just me, or do a lot of drivers of SUV's/Trucks think they own the road?! today a guy in a chevy truck cut me off to get onto the highway on ramp. yesterday, some guy in a chevy truck made me swerve into another lane of traffic because he wanted to get over into my lane. the day before that, a ford explorer tried to do the same thing, and then a ford excursion tried to do the same damn thing no more than a quarter of a block after that!

If they're not off-road they are a waste of time and money. But, whatever. I have a car that suits me (P5). That's all that matters.

yeah i usually give 'em the "california cut" (cut them off before they can cut you off). the only time i don't do that is when i'm not aware they're about to cut me off, or if their ride is banged up. if they're ride is already banged up, they probably really don't care if they hit you or not. this definitely holds true here in new orleans, where a lot of people drive around w/o insurance. they'll slap a $6,000 set of rims on their ride, install a half dozen TV's, and fill their trunks with 15" subs, but they won't fork over the cash for insurance! *sigh* i can't wait to move back to cali!

SUVs are taking over the raod, and I hate it.

The ones that crack me up are the Cadillac and Lincolns - I mean it's a TRUCK - get a real truck or get a luxury car. Morons spend $50k on a vehicle that does nothing well - other than suck up gas.

Now my lady has a Jeep Cherokee - this is a real truck. It's not god-awful huge, it's not all lux-ed out and pimpin. It's got shift on the fly 4 wheel drive (with a HANDLE, not a soccer-mom button), low range, and solid front and rear axles. It'll kick the ***** off of any of the "luxo-utes" once the road disappears, and we USE it that way - we go offroading and drive on the local beaches (with a permit) for some fishing. It's a REAL truck.

People who buy a big-*** rolling house oughtta be forced to live in the stupid thing.

And big or not, I always make a point of NOT letting them take advantage of their size. They are too big to get out of their own way anyway, so when things get "tight", I put the zoom zoom to work and zip right around their big lumbering asses.

Cadiallac Escalade EXT, Licoln Navigator, BMW X5 (which is kinda nice, though), the ugly Mercedes, Lincoln Blackwood, Toyota Sequoia and Land Cruiser (a shadow of it's former self, the Cruiser is) - gimme a break. Get a real truck - they all scream "look at me! I make lots of dough! I can take over the road! Look at me and my bigness!" We are looking - and laughing. Fools.

In general, many people buy SUV's out of ignorance. There are very few who actually do research on what they're buying. The sheer size of these things instills a sense of security, thus that's why these individuals feel that they can cut in front of you. On the flipside, I also see people in regular cars cutting in front of semi's, school buses, and yes SUV's.

The driver's attitude contributes a lot to their safety (and those around them), sometimes more than the type of car itself. I'll admit that we have a SUV - '91 Nissan Pathfinder (136K miles and running strong), the only reason we got it was to be able to prerun/check out jobsites (construction business) and be able to carry more than 3 people. Yes, I am sick and tired of being stuck behind huge SUV's, but we should be blaming the driver's of the SUV's, and not the vehicle.

BTW, I'll be getting an '03 LB MP5 very soon, this will be our first "sportscar" (we only had trucks, sedans and minivans so far) Can't wait!

But this is a perfecly legitimate reason for owning an SUV. I don't hate all of them - mostly just the "luxo-utes" - they serve no purpose at all, and people buy them because they are big and "look cool".

Besides, a Pathfinder is hardly a large SUV. I don't really mind the mid-sized ones or even the compact SUVs like the Rav4 and CRV (no matter how ugly the CRV is....). I really loathe the HUGE SUVs - they are just plain dangerous.

Around here, we have roads (parkways) designated for passenger cars ONLY - no commercial traffic. They just began to allow pick-ups to be registered as passenger vehicles, which is a huge mistake, IMO - but some of these SUVs are so big, they almost cannot be driven safely on these roads. I've seen more than on 5-foot-nothing little housewife in an Expedition or worse - an Excursion - who can't keep the frigging thing in lane.

And it ain't safe when they flip 'em, even if they are borderline safer than cars in a collision.

I just hate the whole "fad" - and that's all it is. "Bigger is better" - it's a joke.

And Porsche is making the Cayenne now - an SUV. The world is crumbling, I swear.

ya i know how you guys feel.....i was driving up to my buddies cottage in the gatineau hills on this 2 lain road....well this ****** in a Dodge ram 2500 comes up and tail gates me for a good kilometer (i could see his headlights+grill in my rear view mirror)...well the highway opened up to 4 lains with a 40 degree incline and a 30 degree turn. Well this ****** tries to pass me on the right (highly illegal in canadian highways), so i downshift and floor it...hehe he couldn't pass me, ended up doing 140km/h around that curve , highway became 2 lanes and he ended up behind me again. At the intersection i turned right and he went streight....god i love the torque on are cars

I believe that vehicles of that size should require a truckers licenses.

How many times have I seen an Escalde or Hummer parked in a compact spot in a parking garage. Gimme a break, the word compact means vehicle, not if you can squeeze your oversized monstrocity in that parking spot.

The worst Part is trying to pass these idiot vehicles, how the heck are you supposed to pass them if you can not see the ongoing traffic!!!

I also had this girl in college who's father purchased her a Surbarban because it snowed in Pullman quite a bit. Unfortunately she is only 5 ft. I saw her trying to make a turn, what she would do is stop the car, unbuckle her seat and crawl to the passenger side to look at the window for upcoming cars. Come on people...get grip on this fad...they should restrict these vehicles.

trucker's licenses?! you've got a point! the other day i drive up in the parking lot of my college, and there's no parking! then i drive around the parking lot a bit more, and there's 2 SUV's taking up 4 spots (2 spots each)!! hmmm, maybe i should suggest to the school that if they're gonna take up 2 parking spots, they should be required to buy 2 parking permits!

Well, I can't wait until the govenment levies heavy liability insurance requirements on these monsters.

Sorry, Mr. Tough Guy - but if you want to drive a 7000 pound vehicle that can inflict an untold amount of damage in an accident as opposed to a normal sized car, you're gonna have to pay for that privelege.

Then maybe we'll see this fad start to dwindle a litle bit. I doubt it will, but they should absolutely have to pay more in insurance - anything over 4000 lbs curb weight should have to pay a 25% or more hike in liability insurance rates (and over 6000 lbs should be at least 50% more), to protect those of us who don't care to drive mobile homes from these people's inability to control their overweight, oversized monsters.

The worst are the big rigs. I saw this one the other day get cut off by a car, so he swerves into the merging lane steps on it and cuts off the car , I couldn't beleive it.

I have to drive a Dodge dakota sometimes. Not that big of a truck but big enough for me. I think alot of it is you can't see anything, that truck has so many blind spots its hard to see anything. The mirros on the thing have to be 3 times the size of the ones on my p5. And the cap on the back is a pain in the *** too. And of coase I feel a little more aggressive with it just because of its size.

SUV's are popular b/c of marketing propaganda which influences everyone's thoughts. As most of you know, the REAL reason behind the the truck craze is that they have lessor EPA emmissions requirements than do "cars". These vehicles would be more expensive if they had to endure the same regulations as do regular cars. Further, even though they are considered 'safe" (merely b/c of mass) trucks/SUV's also do not have the same safety standards that cars must meet.
Yeah, we have a 4x4, too (Bronco II), but it's function is going up wet and icy dirt/gravel mountain roads and then being sooo old and ugly that no one would steal it when we park it for several days while camping.
