Just for giggles, I did some math, assuming that the contents of the story were accurate...
Acura RSX Type-S with stock tranny and tires:
Speed @ 7000 rpm in 5th gear: 128.3 mph
RPM at 128.3 mph in 2nd gear: 16,190 RPM (!!!)
Even if he had shifted properly and hit 4th gear, the engine would have hit 8,720 RPM, and the results still might not have been pretty.
