Thumbs down "RiceRiceRiceRice....."

HEY! You probably clicked on this thinking you'd see some stupid "RIce" car I was reporting so we could all make fun of it or something but NO! This thread is different! I was just cruising the forums and I realized how obsessed everyone is with being anti-"rice". people actually go out of their way to show pictures of some aftermarket accessory just to bash it? Honestly folks, this reminds me of Junior high when kids had to point out stupid stuff to make themselves feel better. Some people seem to think that they are soooooo above "rice". Let's face it - there IS no defenition to the term and refering to commonly customized cars like civics as ricemobiles etc is a generalization. Saying that in some little disclaimer in which you make stupid "this is rice, those are rice" comments just doesn't cut it! PLEASE folks! If there is something you don't like, don't bring it up. Here's an example of how you sound : Have you all seen "Nick Burns: the company computer guy" on SNL? I know it's funny but really, some of you guys are like the car version of him. It just *Ticks me off and I know I'm not alone! Not only is the term "rice" dumb in it's lack of a common defintion, but doesn't it have a slight racial undertone? I know we drive japanese cars, but that just makes it all the more strange that we use the term... If all of protege club can't stop it's anti-"rice" obsession, let the 1st gens be the ones to do it! PLEASE DROP IT!

Actully I am a lot like Nick Burns, I AM the company's computer guy. Bashing rice is "cool" these days, so people hop on the bandwagon. It's just one of those words that people throw around to be cool, it's one of those 'fad phrases'.

I try not to use the word rice, it's a bit tired. There's been a lot of debate here on the forum about what is rice, what's not, blah blah blah, and it's not going to stop until it's not "cool" anymore.

If I see a car I don't like, I say it's ugly.

[edit]I don't think there are any racial undertones, it's just one of those words that everyone throws around. But what do I know?

Ohhhhhh, by the way YOU'RE WELCOME!

Thank you funkdaddysmack, I like the "I call it ugly" line....ME TOO! And i don't necessarily think this is off-topic. I'm addressing it to first genners, and this is the "general" first gen forum... but go ahead and move it if you want.

Just a big THANK YOU to Tony for vocalizing what a good number of posts have also brought to my mind lately.

I've observed that Mazda drivers, for whatever reason, often want to separate themselves from the masses of younger people who do tasteless things to their cars - very often to Hondas - seemingly just for the sake of alteration.

The word "rice" is too easy to use. If there's something you don't like about a car, say what that is and not simply that it's "ricey", etc. It's akin to calling something inane simply "gay". It is mildly offensive to some, including myself. And it's lazy. It's a general word of disapproval that requires too little thought by which to spew off hate. Say what it is you don't like about it if you must. Or better yet, don't say anything at all. Use your powers of observation to learn what you will opt to not do to your own car(s). I've been guilty of finding humor in others attempts at customization. Maybe that's wrong.

If we think we can alter/optimize (or not, at our individual options) our vehicles more tastefully than others do, that seems like a better goal than finding the worst examples we can, pointing fingers at them, and laughing hysterically.

We drive great cars. I bought my Mazda because I felt it was a superior vehicle in its class. If Honda could replicate the kind of driving prowess my Protege has, maybe they'd have a chance at seeing a dime of my money... that is until I save up enough for my S2000.

When I think of rice, like in "rice-burner"(that's where it came from, right?), I think of shitty exhaust pipes that buzz like a bumble bee. And yes, there are definate racial undertones.
But then, there's racial undertones to a lot of cars...
-Redneck in a full-sized truck,
- Black guy in a lowered Impala,
-White chick in a Miata,
-Mexican in a chevy.
-Oriental guy in a rice-burner
So if people think I'm a ricer because I've got a coupla add-ons to the car I drive, they're ******* stupid!
I hope that I don't sound like the redneck in the full-sized truck with my little list, It's just that I think that people should drive whatever car they like, and can afford. Period.

People dont know what to think nowadays, something gets big and everybody follows it, like the people saying that FATF didnt have an effect on people's cars, or the excessive amount of street racing, there were so many people sayin that knowin that their fav. movie was in fact FATF, and they drove eclipses and all other tuners... theres a friend of mine used to race alot at night, then everyone started doin it and it got boring... everything goin on is a fad, racing, ricers and makin fun of ricers, and it will soon pass over as did every other fad.

So let people speak their minds about ricers cuz theyll all stop as soon as a new fad comes out and people follow that.

I just reinforced what I said earlier.

I expressed a non-specific disapproval, without substantiation or explanation. And it was insufficient.

That's the same way I feel about people throwing the word "rice" around. They're really not saying anything at all.

my defenition of rice...

ok..when i think of rice...i dont think of hondas..i dont think of loud exhausts..i think of "fad" cars...like cars with "hubcaps" that have the look of rims..i think of aluminum wings..i think of "super street" stickers across your car..those cheesey euro taillights ...or a GTR badge on any car besides a skyline. Thats what i see rice as..people who do really corny looking things to their rides. I see the word rice as more of a way to express the way a corny car looks..kinda like how we use curse words to express our feelings at the moment...u know what i mean?..its like when i hit my head i say aww ****!....and when i see a sentra with an aluminum wing super street stickers and altezza tailights i say Whoa rice! ..lol i dunno i hope u guys fel what im sayin

Oh and um...Fast and the furious did *** the scene up Big Time!

This is rice:

Basically, "rice" is just about anything that is an after-market add on that SIMULATES an actual performance upgrade.

As well, ANY kind of after market lights other that amber, red or clear/white is rice.

I never go around bashing or flaming anyone for putting some personality into their car...hell, its their money. As long as they like it. However, if you go and post the pics of your new flashing red exhause tip and you ask everyone "how do you like my car?", look out: you asked me.

Ahhhh, those were the days... Old skool! hehe

I like NPT. So now we all should just swap the implications associated with "rice" and put them with NPT. I'm glad to read that this thread has kinda took off. And it's intelligent conversation too! Gotta love prowners!
