Here is the deal, guys. I am getting one thing for christmas from my Mother, and I've decided on a digital camera. I would like a 3.2 or so megapixel camera, but the price has to be right. Can everyone post which digital camera they have and possibly with a sample pic to see what the camera is capable of? Thanks everyone!

 

I have the "Sony Mavica MVC-CD1000". I dont really try anything major with it I just point and click the button, so im sure it is capable of much more than what i use it for.

I've got a Canon G2. It's a great all around camera and does great photos. I was taking a picture of the Seattle skyline when from work when I got it, then when I looked later the resolution was so good I could zoom in and see a guy talking on the phone in his office at the shipyard in the foreground.

The interface where you download the image to the 'puter sucks though. A film reader fixes that.

 

Kodak Dx350, not a bad camera.. not a good camera.. but it was only 250 bux CAD!!!! 1.5 years ago!

 

keep this in mind when picking a digital camera....unless you plan on buying photo paper and printing out the images you take with your digital camera.....you don't need a camera that takes images with that high of a resolution....all you will end up with is image files that are HUGE...IF your primary use will to be able to send images over the net in email and post them up to places like this...then something a lot cheaper with less resolution will do you just fine.

I have a Sony, their Mevica FD-85....its only 1.3 mega pixels.....I like it mostly because it records the images directly on a standard floopy disc...and there is no need to have an interface or cables or anthing to download images off of the camera....just pop the disc in and open them with any standard image editing program.....

NOW....whether or not you realize it....your monitor, every monitor only displays images at 72 Pixels/inch...so if your primary use is for what I talked about earlier....a high res camera is a total waste of money.

 

I use a FujiFilm 4700, 4.3 mega pix. Top of the line 1.5 years ago and its still up there with the big boys. 300-500 bucks

The best thing to ask you is:

1) What is your mother using the camera for?
2) What functionality does she need? (It makes no sense in getting the best camera if she only uses 10% of the features and can not understand the rest)
3) Budget

Now, I recently purchased an Olympus C-4000 Zoom It is a 4MP and takes excellent pictures. I got the camera for like $320 on a pricematch at Staples. For a camera purchase like this I recommend find one of the camera you like that either Staples or Sears (2 local stores that internet price match) and then find the lowest price online and they will match it. Then if you have a problem, you don't have to worry about retun shipping and such.

I would generally stay away from the newer Sony products, unless you really like buying memory sticks. Get something where you can buy the memory cards from other places, get more memory for cheaper prices.

I have a little Kodak I use. $200 and it does everything I need it to do. Even has a decent little zoom, and is easy to operate. If I were you I would worry more about the zoom capability than the megapixel rating, and rechargeable batteries because those things eat batteries.

 

My dad just got this one for my mom for christmas. I played around with it in the store and the pictures are pretty good. It also has a lot of cool functions that I really liked.

Thats cool. I told my mom to go ahead and get me the Fuji FinePix A303 3-megapixel camera.

 

I took this pic a few weeks back with a Nikon 4300. I dropped the resolution and quality so you didn't have to download a 4 meg file. The original looks awesome.
