Re: A neat desktop prank for Windows users

Seeing pictures of all these desktops reminded me of a prank some friends and I used to pull on Windows users back at college, here's how it goes ...

1. Turn off Auto Arrange for icons on the desktop, and move the icons all over the place, randomly
2. Take a screen shot of their desktop
3. Make this screenshot the new desktop background
4. repeat step 1 onwards, as many times as you have the patience to

For best results, save as bmp or ppm (or some other non-lossy uncompressed image format - unlike jpeg) every time. Otherwise the oldest icons from the earliest screenshots will start getting fuzzy.

Then watch them try to figure out which icons are real (very few!) and which ones are just a part of the background desktop!

ROTFLYAO!

This is great!! we used to do the same thing exept after we took the screenshot we would then set the start menu to auto hide and drag it to the top of the screen. They always thought their PC was locked up because they couldnt click on their start button.

Sweet - that's one we didn't try (at least I don't remember doing it). But creating a fake start bar somewhere else on the screen befaure performing one of the screen captures - priceless! How about one along each side? Including at the bottom?

That's a waste of time.

You could of just make a screenshot of the desktop (and set it as wallpaper), then change the option to turn off the display of desktop icons, and then resize the taskbar out of the way so that it's hidden.

It works every time!

Yeah, sure - if you're lazy
But then they'd know right away that nothing works, as opposed to finding that some icons work, and some don't - which would confuse the hell out of them and maximize enjoyment and laughs for anyone (the perpetrator!) peeking into their screen!

hehe one prank that i do...and still do...

Our school computers are a little different then yours...we have very limited access...very limited (unless you know how to hack into it...which is also fun to do...cuz then you can see whose on, and see everyones passwords and ****...hacking is fun)

but when the computer starts up...there is a novell netware login screen, haha, so you have to log in to use the pc...
but in the start menu, you can open up the login screen again, so what we do is minimize everything, and hide the task bar...move it to the top, and just leave that login thing there (with them still logged in)

and they come back...get pissed at why we logged them off (most people know about the trick so when i move the start bar to the top...they don't know and actually think that they are logged out)

so they try to log ion...and it won't let them...HAHA...funny watchging them...until they restart the pc... which then they have to wait at least 10 mins for their logged in status to clear from the database.

funny stuff tho

The picture is from http://www.savegsd.org

Unfortunately I live in an apartment right now so I don't have the option of getting a doggie

And winamp isn't part of the desktop BTW, it's just there

Another good trick is switching the left and right mouse buttons in the control panel. Watch them click for hours trying to figure that one out!
