My First Experience With VVTL-i
A friend of mine got a 2002 Celica GT-S a few months ago, and I've never been able to get a ride in it because we're both usually pretty busy. Last night coming home from wings I talked him into taking me and my roomate for a ride. As far as I know, the only mod he has done to it for performance is a CAI. He has a lot of plans, but that's about all for now.
For those of you who don't know, VVTL-i is the toyota equivalent of VTEC for honda. I think it stands for variable valve timing and lift or something like that. Needless to say, it freaking rips. Up to about 6k it's pretty normal, but once it hits 6500 and the 'lift' (as he calls it) kicks in, it's literally like a very small turbo spooling up, or a 25shot of NOS. Granted, I've never ridden in a car with NOS, but you could feel the extra power the engine churns out. Things end right about at 8k (the fuel cutoff), but it's impressive when it's there.
Now, let me first say, I think it's a super sweet car, has good power, handles well, and looks nice (at least to me). However, the reviews I've read on the car are right... It's too tough to keep in the powerband or 'lift'. From 6500 to 7800 or so it's a REAL nice ride, but that's a really narrow band of power.
We got on the ramp to get on the highway (15N for your PA people) and he just gets on it. It was still impressive with 3 people in the car. Hitting the lift in 3rd and 4th was awesome, and cruising at about 90-100 was silky smooth. At that point he put it into 6th to cruise, and then just said **** it and threw it back into fifth and wound it out until we hit to fuel cutoff (around 135). First of all, I wasn't driving so don't get on my ***, and second there were no cars around so we weren't endangering anyone else. I'm starting to think I'm the only sane driver out there!

from what the guy at the toyota dealership told me when i drove the corolla.......the toyota's version is different then honda in that honda's only kicks in at high rpms.......supposedly toyota's varies the valve timing and duration at all rpms......well that's what i heard anyone know if the mazda one will also be like this or more like the honda one??

actually Honda also claims that their new i-VTEC adjusts timing and lift throughout the rev band, instead of 'kicking in' at a certain rpm.
I believe Mazda's new S-VT will also adjust throughout the rev band...

the new cams only kick in at a certian RPM (usually a very high RPM such as 6500) because if those cams were to engage at lets say 2000RPM, the car would run like sh*t, it would proabbly stall out. thats why honda has cams for normal daily driving and "spirited" driving.

hmm how bout the mazda 787B i think it was that..the 4 rotor le mans winner hehe..imagine driving that down the highway!!

I've heard of lumpy idles and stuff, is this the same stuff because damn I'd love to drive around with VTEC on all day (if my car had something like that).

Just jump in a Vette Z06 (or even a stock one for that matter) and pin your freaking ears to the seat.
While I have great appreciation for all that has been done with small displacement motors these days, IMO, there is no substitute for big cubes. I'll take 5.7 liters of pure ripping fun V8 any day.
Oh - and it probably gets damn near the same gas mileage as most of the 4 cylinder rockets, too.

My dad has a Y2K coupe, though - I drive it when I get the chance, maybe once every few months.
Awesome car - I think one of the best things is the view out over the hood - just makes you feel powerful. Oh, yeah - and the gas pedal is a cool feature, too.
