Comparing the Coooper (base) to the ES I would go with the Cooper. Better gearbox, similar (I think better since BMW usually errs on the low side for horsepower and performance numbers) acceleration, smooth engine (still loud though), and a rock solid suspension. Plus full maintenance for 3 years with loaner cars (real cars not POS Ford rentals like my dealership). The level of service I got at the BMW dealership was far beyond that of my Mazda dealership. Salesman were all polite and extremely well trained, no pressure selling tactics, etc. Service bays were immaculate. The Cooper does not carry as much standard equipment as the ES but the 1250 premium package fixes that real quick, add an additional 1250 for 16" rims with runflats, (doesn't really feel like it needs them), bolstered seat, and DSC. Stock stereo is 20 times better than the Mazda unit. Doesn't use dunlop tires (for those who have complained in the past about the Dunlops).

So get a base Cooper.

With $2k put into the suspension the Protege can and will outhandle your base Cooper.

Did I mention my Protege has a back seat?

I think you missed the point. I have a Mini Copper S and it does have a back seat (I'm not tall so someone can use it). As to the Protégé out handling the Mini, well the Protégé does handle very well. But if auto cross racing is a clue then the Mini is the better handling car. I have not lost to a Mini yet but I'm sure I will.

The sport package (1250) includes an upgraded suspension. But it is already better than Protege by far, I have trouble believing an MSP would be able to keep up with a Cooper S and I know a Pro can't keep up with the base Cooper. And I'm not getting a base Cooper. I'm going to buy an S in a couple of months, if I don't get a 325i.

Ok I had mine Protégé looked at one of the front struts is shot. Both the front and rear brakes are gone. In addition, he thinks that the transmission is on the way out. Something about a shaft in it is bad and makes a funny noise in first and second gear from 1500 RMPs to 3000 RPMs.
