meteor shower - leonids
This month (November) there's supposed to be a good meteor shower... This one is the Leonids. The peak time to view this shower will be on the 18th, and 19th of the month... here's a site that tells you a bit more about how to view it, and gives some times too.

Yeah, I saw them last year also, at the same time freezing by ***** off, and even though you were not able to see many of them per hour in Maine, even seeing a few blazing through the sky and leaving blueish-greenish tail behind them is something you don't see every day. A great experience, and I highly recommend it.

Nice - I went down to the beach to see them last year, and it was well worth the trip.
It was about 4 am, and the roads to and around the beaches were packed! Kinda cool to see such interest in it around here.
Thanks for the tip - I'll be trying to go catch a glimpse for sure - praying for clear skies on Long Island!

Damn - I'd love to, but we've got a nor'easter going on here - cloudy, windy and rainy - been like this all weekend, and tomorrow will still be cloudy at least.
Anyone know how long the shower is supposed to last? Will there be a "peak" day? I really want to go see, but the weather is not cooperating at all.

Supposedly the true peak shoule be around 5:30 AM, tuesday morning.
According to what I heard on the news, this could be one of the best showers in a century - peak is expected to have between 2900 and 6000 meteorp per hour!! - that is intense.
Looks like my early morning routine of getting up at the ***-crack of dawn for work might pay off tomorrow - I'll be leaving for work right around that time - hope it kicks ***.
For anyone who has never seen the Leonids - get out there. It's an absolutely awesome display of nature - not much else like it.

BUT - when these come around, you can look just about anywhere you want - the sky oughtta be filled with them!
I know last year (or was it 2 years ago? Tought to remember) I was looking mainly straight up, and slightly south and east - it's not much on the horizon, more straight overhead.
Seriously though - if this year is a good as they predict, you'll have NO trouble finding which way to look - just watch for blazing streaks in the sky - they're tough to miss!

It was kind of hard to see anything here in LA, what with all the city lights and a full moon. But, looking to the constellation Leo, about where Jupiter is (they don't call them Leonids for nothing), I probably saw about 30 in total, with 4 that left a trail. No exploding ones though.

I put a bunch of sleeping bags and pillows in the bed of my sisters truck and layed there all nite. Saw a few from 2-3 and when 4am rolled around the show got really good! The sky was perfectly clear all nite! Saw a few big green fireball ones that left long trails, and lots of smaller ones. I actually got to see an exploding one it was cool. It was fun.
