was just helping friend install a turbo on a civic

I was just helping my boy install a turbo on a civic 1.6L , and to be honest it is seriously bugged out ,,.. 1st he paid 1500 for a complete Greddy kit without intercooler. and 2nd it straight up bolt on , with no problems , aside from just drilling the oil line ... I mean damn ,, can we get some love... it really sucks that we have to go the custom route and it would cost us double what it would cost him to get a complete bolt on .... think what you want ,, but it does suck

Hey Dumbo ,,, I am talking about Turbo's , wich last I CHECKED was forced induction......... damn it seem like you can't wait to be a *** can you .........
and the price of that turbo with manifold was 895 ... the cost of my friends whole kit with pipping and down pipe , filter and computer was 1500 ......................

I agree. I guess when I had my Civic, I didn't realize how 'spoiled' Honda/Acura owners were. Now that I have a Protege, and there are no kits yet, I realize it for sure

the price for the manifold and turbo alone is running upwards of 900 bucks maybe less, plus custom pipping , plus down pipe ,, wich would bring you to over 1500 easy ,,... so don't frigin sit there and tell me any damn BS about 900 bucks for a frigin turbo , when you know how much it frigin costs ,,, I have gotten 2 quotes , just for the custom manifold and turbo and the price has been consecutively 800-900 bucks ......

To clear things up.

I purchased CHDesigns turbo kit. It included.

Garrett T25 w/ T28 ball bearings
Starion Front Mount Intercooler
TurboXS BOV
Blitz Street Spec Boost Controller
Blitz FATT DC Full Auto Turbo Timer
CHDesign log style ported exhaust manifold
CHDesign 2.5" downpipe
Autometer Boost
Vortech 10:1 FMU
Non-intercooled piping
Tapped oil pan

It was sold to me for $900. Which was NOT the cost of the kit new. Granted if all the extras were not in there(ie. boost controller, turbo timer) the price would have gone down a lot.

CHDesign kept his prices low because all of the custom work was done by him. He made the manifold. He made the downpipe. Al labor was by him. That is where your cost is, LABOR.

So I will break down what it would take to make a CHEAP *** turbo kit:

Turbo - ebay $200 - $300
Manifold (they actually sell these kits on ebay) - $150
Downpipe - custom - $200
FMU - vortech - $150
Piping - custom - $100
Oil/Vacuum Lines - any store - $50
Misc - $50 - $75

This is a basic stage one bare bones turbo kit. Non-intercooled, no BOV. There are absolutely no bells and whistles on this. That evens out at around $900 - $1000

So in essence, if you know what you are doing...you can turbo your car for under $1000. Yeah it's nice to have a kit and all. But if you think about it, they do the same thing. One just might be prettier than the other.

these are for the 2.0 3rd gens

There are a few kits out for the protege. The best one I think for the 2001 and up is the Wings West though, but there is Erebuni, FXdesign.com, and one more I think 1 or 2 more that I can't remember right now. It should come to me later.

what are you talking about , they use two different manifolds, If I had a 1.8 I would not need a manifold built , and I would not need custom pipping , cause I could just email escort guys and get all that , plus corksport has the manifold for the 1.8 .. so are you trying to tell me the 1.8 manifold will fit a 1.5 ,,, if so , you better explain that to me ....

and ED , you telling me 900 for the kit and then custom pipping that I would have to do myself(how would I do it myself) ... I don't have a pipe bender , I don't have a welder ...... so umm how do you figure I would do this myself ... not to mention the need of a downpipe , that I maybe could get away by using one from a turbo escort 1.8 .. so that aside .. where does it say that chdesign can make a kit for the 1.5 and has he said so ,, if so I have not heard of this ...... if he did make a kit for our car , then heck yeah I would look into it . but as far as I know the only person that did was Braden , and it was cool but really pricy at close to 900 bucks for a manifold and a turbo .. plus shipping ...

If ch makes quality stuff as I don't know his work .. then that would be cool .. but as I said before , I have heard nothing of him saying anything about "I can make a kit for your 1.5's ..... " and I am pretty sure yall have not heard him say anything of the sort

Wasn't the whole start of this post about how the honda/acura guys can get an "Idiot proof" Turbo setup right out the box and slap it in with no problems....

Now here (the previous post) is how "we" have to go chasing around pieceing together a complete kit and making visits to fab shops... And I gaurntee if you start doing stuff like that, it's not gonna be only one visit... Even if you can do it for around the same price... One hell of a lot more hassle...

I just got quoted for a basic turbo setup (I'm assuming this is including labour). Kit starts at $4500CDN for either 1.5L or 1.8L. Kit includes (off the top of my head).

-Turbo
-Exhaust mani. & downpipe
-FPR
-Necessary custom pipes
-Oil return feed
-K&N cone filter

I can't remember the rest coz' the guy was speaking too damn fast! But basically, it's a 60HP adder. No intercooler. And if you want an intercooler, it's an extra $1500CDN (includes labour I think)!!! With a projected 60HP power addition, I'm going to safely estimate that at 6psi non-intercooled.

Still expensive IMO, even if you take out the labour and just add up the parts (probably around $2000CDN MINIMUM).

I agree with Bruce95, it's not an everyday occurance that you see someone peice together a turbo kit for $900. The average custom job should include an intercooler as it will help you run optimal by helping cool you intake charge. Running a turbo without an intercooler is just silly IMO. Kinda like putting a filter on a throttle body and thinking it will be fine. I looked into piecing a kit together aswell and the cheapest custom fab'd manifold price I got was $450 and it was rubbish. Yes you can buy a cheap used turbo, but it depends on if you're ok with running a used turbo.

Anyway, lets get back to the topic at hand here (Civic Kits). I too forget about how spoiled I was when I had my 97 Civic.

Don'te worry guys, with the popularity of the P5, we'll have some power parts available in the comming months.

Finally , people understand what I am talking about ... cause if you think about it , I take really good care of my car and would not want to put a used part on it , unless I new the person that had it and new how they took care of their stuff ,, especially with something like a turbo wich is so finiky , cause you have to be sure to constantly change your oil and make sure it is clean as the turbo really needs this ... Jesse you did a good job of explaining the parts needed , but my main thing in this post was how you can just buy a complete kit that is made FOR YOUR CAR .. and BOLTS UP PERFECT , and HAS NO IMPERFECTIONS (Practically) ....... for instance ,getting a custom muffler with custom pipping ,, I have gone through two muffler pippings from the cat back in 2 years ... costing me 150 for pipping each time and 100 bucks for the muffler each time ,,, now if we had a straight up bolt on cat back exhaust for the Protege ,, I would not have that problem .. add the money I spent and you will see ,,, just buy a cat back that bolts up ... I know they make the mazdaspeed exhaust and I am wishing that I had just bought that .........

But overall unless you have the 1.8 in wich you can get some lee way due to the ford escorts running turbo and the earlier protege's being turbo ,, your stuck out there..... our mazda's are great cars , but will we ever have as many parts as these dang honda guys .. I have been around here for almost 5 years and have yet to see our Protege's get as much attention.. in this aftermarket world as most other cars in general ......
I really hope things change , I notice that only cause of the coming of the p5 has there been any real change, as for some reason that car just really caught on and is saying something out there...

just my 2 cents ,, don't take it personally guys
