Was I wrong, I didn't RAT

So I am at work today , and my shift typically overlaps with a gentleman before me. So we are both standing and about 5 to 10 feet apart from each other and a guy comes in and tells him that he wanted to go downstairs to get something to eat. He was with a hotel employee.. yadyadyada. My friend lets him in and he goes down stairs(this guy is NOT an employee) ... ok whatever... Turns out our BOSS was down stairs in the Restaurant and then calls me up stairs and asks me, "Did you give this guy permision to come downstairs?". Well I did not say yes , but did not say no! cause it was the other guy that told the guy he could go. So anyway I got a bit of a reaming for it . But then on the way upstairs the other guy admits to Bossman that he was the one that gave the ok and he takes full blame for it .. and god did he get the reaming... Now I know that my boss is a bit tead at me for not being a RAT<STOOL PIGEON<DIRTY PENGUIN, But I did not grow up telling on people and rating people out. I know taking the dive for people can be ruff, but damit I was in a ruff spot... I still did not rat the other guy out though .. He is a cool guy though and we have both been with our company about the same amount of time.

Do you guys think I was wrong to not rat the guy out ?.. Should I have told on him?
I grew up in a manner all my life of not telling and announcing who did what.. so that was a really tuff call...

Today was a RUFF day!!!!!1

Your boss sounds like a dick...
Actually he should be happy to have two employees that work together as a team and aren't interested in elevating personal status at the expense of the other!
IMO, your friend owes you a beer and your boss owes you an apology and you, dude, are way cool!

thanks bro , I just kinda felt weird. See my boss is a EX-COP , so you already know how they like to get info.. No disrespect to Police. But I just don't see the point of telling every little thing, especially when I am contracted out . I am not even a real employee of theirs.. If he confronts me about this , I will basically just tell him that we are a team , and that if one guy takes the blam we all take the blam. He probably won't like that though , as there is a stoll pigeon that works for the hotel security and keeps banging his head under my Boss' desk.

you shouldn't feel bad
you didn't do anything wrong, it was your team mate
and there is nothing wrong to say that it wasn't your fault

anyway, your boss is an *******
what is his problem
I work in the Patriot Center and I work PT as an usher/supervisior, and I give every now and then exceptions, and my supervisior above me don't mind and they are cool about it

where do work anyway Bruce
like front desk at a hotel or something?

Bruce, man, you did what you had to do, and I would have done the same thing was I wearing your shoes. Your boss definately is a Mjr. Dick, but he is boss, and you can only do so much about it.

this is true ,,, I mean the guy was totally wrong in letting the guy go downstairs , and our boss was already complaining that we are slipping and yadayada yada , so this just added to the fury..
But still I refuse to be the one to have to say he did this , I was really banking that my friend would be a man and come forth and admit what he did. But I was not going to do it for him. I was glad that he did though , cause I probably would have ended up quiting .

BUT I WAS COOL,,, LIKE A LATIN GUY WITH A PONY TAIL ....

my friend is back in hawaii after a short stint with the coolest police job in the world. basically, she was labeled a safety specialist, which performs both fire and police duties. starting around $60k (she's 25) only 3 were picked from hawaii. anyhoo, her friend (one of the 3) did something wrong (nothing major, kinda like ur situation about letting someone go somewhere unauthorized), which she knew about. bosses found out, but my friend didn't rat. BOTH got fired.
my friend regrets not saying anything. she screwed a perfectly good career bc she chose not to rat.

i'm not saying u should, but in her case, for not telling the truth and "backing her friend's story", she lost a $60k/yr job. she could've been in the $75k/yr in a few short yrs, but she chose wrong.

hard to say. i know i have friends, but if it's gonna be my @ss on the line as well... ?

hold on 1hawaiian , did you say she backed her friends story...
That's lying..

see with me , I just told my boss that me and the guy(other working guy) was here and we let him in to go get something to eat... So I kinda admitted to it , but did not fess up who the real culprit was ..
But damn your friend probably should have layed the cards on the table

well, she "backed" her friend's story by not saying anything.
she saw the whole thing, but when they came to her and asked what if she knew anything... damn, it's just like ur story...

she didn't lie.
but she didn't tell the truth either.
somehow the bosses didn't find that to be too amusing.

i'm not saying be a rat.
but at some point in ur life/career u gotta weigh out the consequences and ask urself, "is it worth it?"

btw, my friend is now making about $25k...

There has to be something ilegal about that ....
Unless she was on camera and they saw, i would deny that **** till the end....
She was wrongfully fired.

actually, it was a lot like ur story (i wonder... )
her friend brought someone in and took them into an unauthorized area (the break room?) anyways, it really wasn't a big deal (more or less), and the bosses knew/saw, and then asked my friend what she knew, which of course she kinda tried not to say much...

i'm not a fan of ratting.
but both stories sound very similar.
and if u were getting $60k + cola, would u have kept silent knowing ur butt was on the line too?

don't know if i could...

i feel bad for my friend cause she thought it really wasn't that big a deal, but from what i understand, they are very strict out there (silicon valley outskirts). she made the wrong choice and had to pay the price...

but i'm glad ur story doesn't have a bad ending (for u)

Bruce, in YOUR case.....you BOTH took responsibility for screwing up....and that was cool.....but the fact that your buddy went to your boss and told him that it was totally HIS responsibility says a lot for your friend. For starters it shows that he is a real friend, and would back you up anytime. That was very admirable, as he didn't have to say a word.....but he did. I think YOU should buy him a beer, and for your boss ripping your ***? well just blow that off...after all...the two of you did screw up. Considering what security is these days.....you just can't be too careful. now can you.

wow... you's a cool guy in this case. i wouldn't have ratted out my co-worker... i don't see the logic in why YOU should have done so in this case. as a supervisor myself, i love seeing people look out for each other... sometimes i have to be the ******* b/c i'm running the show.. however that is my job, why should YOU have to be an *** too? in no way do i see you in any kind of wrong... go drink a beer and take your buds out as well and enjoy this long wkend!
