I don't really think there was much 'flaming', there were more people over there congratulating him then saying that his car sucks. Seemed pretty mazda-friendly to me

Handling and stuff. I think. I just wish they woulda put more work into the drivetrain than they did in the suspension. I'm not saying it sucks, but i just feel let down. Unimpressed. Sue me. I don't think im the only one that feels this way. But i'd still love to own one.

There was a magazine that tested the SRT-4 against the Mazdaspeed, they took the cars to there favorite mountain road and it took the SRT-4 3 miles before it was finally able to pull enough of a lead. And thats only because the SRT-4 had a power advantage.

The way i see it, your buying a car that can out handle anything in its class(stock). And has the potential to make great power, Mazda already put a turbo on it. Put a boost controller in, a better exhaust, a better intake and a front mount intercooler and that SRT-4 is not going to have the edge on that mountain road anymore.

If mazda had put more power into the Mazdaspeed the price of the car would have gone up and would have put the Mazdaspeed into a different class. Mazda put there money were it was needed, they just left room for improvement for the buyer.

well on the other hand, I'm somewhat glad it isn't much more powerful than they made it out to be, otherwise you'd have the honda crowd turning away from the traditional rsx, civic si, and favoring the msp instead. Then our beloved unique car would be in the hands of ricers.
As for Mazda leaving room for improvement for its clients...I can't think of anything that would improve power except maybe a cone filter. The MSP has already been saturated with aftermarket parts, and replacing aftermarket parts with aftermarket parts doesn't make much sense.

In my opinion, the Mazdaspeed can still use an upgrade in the engine compartment. True the car comes with alot of aftermarket parts, but they are on almost every part of the car except the engine. There is much room for upgrading under the hood, it's just a matter of how much time and money you are willing to invest.

Adam
91 LX (undergoing turbo motor swap and J-spec conversion)
93 3000GT SL (undergoing VR-4 conversion)
78 Corolla Wagon (street car)

what's below is nice, but that engine is way to delicate to be turning the boost up and getting pedal happy. Ofcourse tuning is the key with any turbo motor. but FOR GODS SAKE ,, why didn't mazda take the time to strengthen the internals of the stock motor before bring the MSP out.
Who the hell wants to have a car that can handle but when you turn the boost up .. frigin rods collapse and piston go ooooowwwwwww.... and then you have a car that can really handle the driveway or the dealer service parking lot ...

The MSP is a nice car, in fact a great car, but it's weakest link is it's motor.. and Jesse and tons of other people know this.

I say bring the BP(dohc) back for the Protege's or 3's or whatever they are calling the next protege replacement. That is when I will consider making car payments on a car that comes from the factory boosted and contains a BP under the hood.

I keep telling people mazda needs to get their act together. kinda like Honda Mitsu and Scooby are doing....
Buy and think what you want.

exhaust, ECU, different turbo, different exhaust manifold, different intake manifold, cams, ports, valves, pistons....etc etc etc.

EVERYTHING can be improved.
oh yeah don't forget to factor in your monthly payments and what not for the car..
If you have to change all this **** .. just go buy a damn Mitsu EVO and get a car with everything already improved from the factory.

i wouldnt buy a $21k MSP and do $6k+ worth of upgrades under the hood. I'd rather buy the base model (MSRP $15k)and work my way up to 21K and still get as much, if not more power, and THEN leave room for improvement for the chassis/suspension. As I mentioned before, replacing aftermarket parts with afermarket parts makes no sense. Besides, the Mazdaspeed muffler looks far more superior than anything else that would replace it.

my thing is ....

Why pay 20 grand for a turbo car, and then have to go and spend another 4 grand on a whole next turbo kit (maybe)with intercooler.

makes no sense... just go buy a faster car for like what 25grand ..
