Fixing Pontiac LeMans

My mom's old car is a Pontiac LeMans and it has some probelms with the engine. I think it might need a tune up, but not quite sure. This is the problem: When you drive it it sometimes dies when trying to acclerate, or barly gets going really slow. There are some noises comming from the engine. They sound like "poom poom poom." Im thinking the cumbustion chamber. I hold down the gas pedal all the way and the rpms dont go up and it barly moves. Then after gaining a little speed it somehow breaks through and rpms go to like 6k.

I think the problem might be that I need to replace the fuel filter, and sparkplugs. We did recently change the oil filter, and oil.

If I get that car running, we are going to sell it, and I will probably get some $$ out of it because I fixed it. So that sounds good to me.

BTW, its a 1992, with around 130k miles.
