Chipped your Xbox?
a minority of people will tell you that its no problem soldering to the top d0. don't listen. you'll see what i'm talking about when you open the box and can't even find the d0, let alone solder to it.
the way i did it - and of course i think this is the best method for a version 1 box is like this......
most people have been threading the d0 wire through one of the unused lpc points and soldering it to the alternate point on the back. our box has the lpc points filled in with solder so unless you have a solder-sucker, do it my way
your chip will have an earth wire with a loop on the end of it - you are meant to screw this to one of the earth points. don't. remove the screw, thread the grey d0 wire through the loop and then through the screw hole. solder the d0 to the alt point on the back - you should then have your earth loop flapping about with a grey wire through the middle. simply solder a part of the earth loop to the metal bit where the screw would have gone and you're done. a good solder joint is superior to a screw connection anyway. i always seem to have parts left over when i fiddle with electronics and this is no exception - throw the screw away
if you've looked at some photos or tutorials on gotmod or xboxscene, you'll have an idea what you're in for - its not as bad as you might think. just pay attention to the little details - i soldered a couple of the wires to the wrong points initially
but once its done, its a nice feeling.
jon: the mod chip allows you to play *backups*, watch multi-region movies, put in a bigger hard drive, store mp3's, games, movies etc. i think it will even make coffee
if you ask it nicely!
basically you can run any unsigned code - a lot of people run emulators for old consoles (n64, dreamcast etc) and things like mame for playing arcade games etc - remember galaxian and space invaders?
it will allow you to ftp from your pc so you can load up your mp3's and put on a media player so you can take your "jukebox" with you. i have movies and *ahem* games stored on my 80gig hard drive and i love it. games load much faster from the hard disk than they do from a dvd and it takes about 10-15 mins to rip a game (that you own
) to the hard disk.......

Yeah, i've been researching mod chips for about 6 months and i've so far heard nothing but good stuff about the x2. I'm glad I waited this long.. Now I'm just wondering if I should wait till the x2-pro comes out, or just go for the lite one. I'm a geek and thus I want the pro, but I know i'll never ever use the extra features that it gives you so i SHOULD get the lite one. Dunno.
jon, if you are actually interested in a chip, it is a trivial 30 min job for any electronic tech at your local electrical store - probably cost a couple of bucks. even better if you know someone who's soldered before......its really quite simple and there is a LOT of information around to help.
go read about it if you get time......

i think you're right about the pro. you'll never use it the way it is intended.
plus, they have just released the plans for a cable you can make (they will make it and sell it eventually) to allow programming the lite from your pc which is the biggest reason to get a pro anyway.
the lite comes with the latest bios and it is the **** so you won't need to upgrade anytime soon........save your money, get the lite
[edit]
oh i almost forgot. you can upgrade the bios using evox anyway if you want, its just that if you screw it up, your mod is essentially history. there is only one way to recover a corrupted lite at this stage and that involves having access to someone else's chip.

Got my chip a coupla days ago!! Prolly install it on monday - I'll let you know how that goes.
So, after I get the chip installed, what's the first thing I do next? Prolly put the evox dashboard on, right? What do I need to do to make an xbox bootable disk?

you need a blank cdrw disk - cdr will not work. have a search around for a program called "xiso" and download a copy of the evox dash from xbins.
in the evox zip file you will find the evox iso which you burn to your cdrw using xiso. thats about it.
the disk will boot your xbox and you can set ftp options and all sorts of stuff.
once you can ftp your box, you can install things like xbcopy and xboxmediaplayer etc - the world is your oyster.
oh, i almost forgot. first things first....when you get to ftp your xbox, make copies of your xbox c and e drives before you do anything else - if you screw things up, you can always put it back the way it started out. burn those drives to a cd and put it away.
next thing is to copy evoxdash.xbe and evox.ini to the c: - you are now ready to boot from hard disk so remove the cd and power on!

wicked man!! thanks!
Ok - so i've gotten a ton of xbox utilities and **** from the xbins ftp off mirc so I'll be set on that level!
Any ideas where i can track down the slayer hard drive utility?? My next step after chipping is swapping for a bigger HD, and I hear that it it's the best thing to use for prepping a new hard drive...
It's not on any of the xbox ftps that I've found...
Chipping tomorrow afternoon! WOOOO!!!
Thanks for all your support, btw!

sorry, i did my hard drive before that slayer thingy came out so i know nothing about it.
i found it simple to follow the tutorial on xbox-scene.com about fitting , setting up and locking a new hard disk - its a trivial job anyway.......
