Car title

i bought my car back in november and my mom's name is on the title as well as the loan. i had to do this because our insurance company was being a ***** about my name being on the title. now I'm moving out and looking to go on my own insurance policy. my question is can i just go to the dealer where i got it and have the title transferred to me or do i have to go somewhere else to do this?

title transfer has to be done in your DMV and the person on the title has to "sell" you the car.

I had this done with my Jeep when I payed it off. I went to a "title" company and payed them to get it done. They guy gave me a "deal" since my fiance knew him. You can do it yourself but you need to go to the DMV and get the right forms fill them out and pay some fees. I think it only cost me about $100. I think it's worth the time and hassle you will probably encounter and the DMV. Also does the insurance company know that you are doing this? Have you called them about getting your own insurance policy? It is probably going to cost more on your own. I have two vehicles and a home owners policy in my name. The Jeep is only liabilty and the Mazda is full coverage. I pay about $200/month for both. Because I have my home owners policy with them as well my insurance has dropped about $15-20 a month.

i'm actually calling a guy tonight for a quote and i'm hoping to get my renter's insurance through them also. i've gotten a couple other quotes and most seem to be a little more or about the same as i'm paying now. i hate being young. $175 a month for insurance is ridiculous.

re-finance the car and use your name as the primary.

Hey that's cheap compared to my Jeep when I first got it the insurance was $220 a month. And the payments were $250. How messed up is that? Now it's only like $50 because it has liabilty.

And Roddimus Prime is right, the only way your mothers name can come off is if she sells you the car.

so what your saying is she could sell the car to me for $1 and i could go down to dmv and get the car registered in my name. and since both our names are on the loan i could choose to refinance that loan in my name only or i could go on paying it like i have been without any problems, correct?

In Maryland if you are related you don't have to buy it, it can be given as a gift. When I did mine it was payed off so I didn'y have to worry about a loan. You would have to talk to someone that knows the ropes. You would probably have to buy it at the amount that's still owed. Just get it refinanced.
