Broke *** car....now what?

Need some advice here...

My gf has (had??) a '91 Jetta GL. It licks, but it worked for the mo

st part.

However, just recently while on a trip, 5th gear slipped out while she was on the highway!!

Now, the car won't go into 5th OR reverse. She took it to a stealership and they have quoted $4800 to fix the tranny!! When they (her dad and her) bought the car, it only cost $5000!!!!!!!

They've also said they can just open it up and take a look, but that's gonna cost $350.00 just to do that BEFORE any cost of repair even takes place.

So here's my question....

What should I do w/ the car? I'm worried that if we get if fixed, it'll be only too soon before something else has to get repaired.

If we do wanna get rid of it, what's the best way to do so and still manage to get a bit of cash back?

Thanks for any advice!!

1) check the wreckers for a replacement transmission?
2) sell it as a "tower's special?"

either way, you're going to beat $5000-$4800=$200.

there's really no 'win' scenario i guess. sorry.

Go and get a used transmission. Most places will take your old transmission as a core so you don't have to worry about getting rid of it yourself. Some shops go as far as giving you a 6-month warranty on used transmissions. Pay the labor or do it yourself, it would be far less than going back to the dealer.

Thumbs down VW's Of That Time = "Worst Cars Ever"

VW's from the early 80's through to the end of the 90's were among the worst cars you could buy (which includes your '91, sorry to say). People would run around just loving them because they conveyed a youthful attitude (which is what VW's advertising wanted you to think, and still want you to think), but the reality of the situation was that they were incredibly sad vehicles. THEY even knew it: They offered the absolute WORST warranty in the industry-- 2 yrs. or 24,000 miles (vs. 3 yrs./36k standard on ALL other makes. ALL of them). You just know a company's product sucks when they haven't the ***** to back up what they make. With all due respect, I'd drop that piece of **** immediately-- You're just throwing your cash out the window, otherwise. Be totally warned: *This is a terrible vehicle*.

On a much, much better note, VW has FINALLY pulled their head out, and is now building quite good cars. The Passat, for instance, is the top rated mid-size sedan; and it's better than average in reliability. It's a great car. The new Jetta is just average; but at least it doesn't suck maggot *** like it used to. The New Beetle still lags behind in the reliability bottom dwellers. VW has also upped their warranty to reflect one BETTER than the standard 3 yr./36k miles. I find that an excellent move, and it further shows that VW is beginning to value and deliver quality. I respect that a lot; if they keep it up. VW's are still more expensive than they should be, though.
