The bit that bit me....

I fucked up my hand nicely at work today. I was drilling, using a 1/4" bit. The tip got stuck (happens all the time), the bit snapped off near the bottom of the flutes (also happens all the time), and then I plunged the leftover part into my ******* palm (does NOT happen all the time).

I went in about 1/2" - seriously. There is blood and skin on the bit (yes, I kept it - see below - though the blood and stuff isn't to visible in the pic) about 3/4" from the leftover tip. It's a nasty gouge in my hand - but I'll spare you those pics.

Instead, here's a nice shot of the bit that got me - it just HAD to break with that spear on the end, too, right? Dammit - this is a bad day!

Nice huh? It went into my hand just past where the "spear" ends and the rest of the bit begins - pretty damn deep if you ask me.

I'm aight - the hole doesn't even really hurt much - my hand does though, because I had to quick wrap that ****** up tight with toilet paper and electrical tape to stop the bleeding and finish the little job I was on. It was really tight, and my hand is now kinda cramped from wearing that for a couple hours.

Looks like I'll be outta work for at least a day or two while it heals up enough to abuse again.

Just bored - figured I'd share my agony.

I guess you'll be having a little chat with the shop steward ? Does it happen to just you or to you and others on the floor? A refusal to work may be in order to get these "incidents" investigated. You pay your dues! Make 'em work for it!

p.s. hope your doing better soon

Nah dude - this isn't the kind of thing that requires action like that!

Bits break - fact of life. Unfortunately, my hand happened to be in the way of this one - in the way of my drill as it slipped, to be exact.

My fault. I know there are other bits that can me used to avoid shattering like this one did, but none of them are durable enough. If I buy a bit at Home Depot or whatever, they last a day - if that. Forget about drilling stainless - one hole and it's all done. These bits last nicely - I can use the same bit for a month if I don't break it and I don't do any stainless. That's thousands of holes drilled in 12 gauge steel with one bit - I wouldn't give them up for anything!

**** happens - I'm doing allright. My hand is sore - but mostly the knuckle on my pointer finger. The drill hit me between the thumb and forefinger, like right on that "pad" at the base of the first finger, but towards the thumb. I think the soreness is actually just from the tight wrap I had on my hand.

Oh BTW - I'm not on "the floor" - I'm a journeyman - so I'm on different jobsites every day - with different shop stewards, too.

dude, sorry to hear that. Hope you be alright. You should probably get it checked out just in case.

Case in point: I sliced the inside part of the Right Thumb knuckle while I was cleaning a knife. Was bleeding like a bitch and did not have it checked out until next day (it was kinda numb also). Had to have surgery to repair an artery and nerves in the thumb. Hand in cast for at least 2 weeks, not sure when I will be able to return to full duty. Moral...If you work with your hands have it checked out asap or you could possibly be without the use of your hand for alot longer than a few weeks.

True dat! I did play a lil' guitar today - just to see. It did hurt some.

It's just a strange sensation, because the actual puncture doesn't hurt much at all. My finger just fells like I sprained it. wierd.

And Neosporin - I live on that ****. I slice myself all the time - avoiding that would be great ) - anyway, I have the routine all down pat - get cut, wrap it with tissue and tape at work to get through the day. Get home, let it air out for a few hours (usually it's all nasty and "waterlogged" by that time) then hit the Neo and bandage. Leave on for a few hours, then remove for more air. I do the bandage on/off every few hours (while not working). The combination of fresh medicine and then fresh air usually heals even nasty slices in two days.

We'll see about this one .

As far as a visit to the doc - what the hell are they gonna do? It doesn't need a stitch - the bleeding is stopped. If there is some sort of nerve damage, I'd probably rather leave it than have surgery, unless it's constantly painful. I dunno - I just figure all the doc CAN do at this point is poke around in there, make it hurt, and send me home with a prescription for some stupid pain killer I won't take anyway. If I need surgery, that won't change in a day or so. I think I'll be fine - I expected this to be hurting MUCH worse than it does.

I already took tomorrow off - gonna nurse it a bit. If things don'e get better or get worse, then it's doc time. But for now, I'll stick with my bandaids and 'sporin.

my dad was working in the basement a couple of years ago .... he had about a 3/4inch long screwdiver, n he was drilling something, n it slipped, and he driled the whole screw right into his hand.... pretty funny actually.... it went in at the bottom side of his arm, where the wrist and palm meet, going from his wrist into his palm, it got drilled into one of his bones there. lol .... he was over a sink unscrewing it out lol, pretty bloody. he said there was no pain, plus stuff like thta happens to my dads hands all the time, cuts here and there. i think hes cut one tendon on his pointing finger, 3 times, in the EXACT same place, lol.

oh well man, it'll all heal, see how it feels in a couple of days, if it styll really hurts, then go see a doc, for now tho, its all about the 'sporin. , hope it heals proper.
