AMD vs. Intel

I saw this today at work. Its a contest between an Athlon MP 2000+ (I'm pretty sure they mean this even though they say 2GHz) versus a 2.2GHz Intel Xeon (I have a couple of these at work and they have been VERY disappointing, not to mention expensive). They are playing 55 matches of chess against each other. You can watch it live (warning the site is in German):

I'll try and translate it and give everyone an update.

Ok. The tournament started yesterday at 17:00 (I think this number is in GMT). Updates:

The computers froze for 10 minutes and the game had to be restarted.

AMD beat Intel in the first match!
The match lasted 71 games.
AMD won 20 games, lost 22, and tied 29 games.

So by saying AMD won 20 games and lost 22 games, you mean INtel won 22 games. Making Intel the overall winner right? That's waht I thought, Intel all the way baby. AMD is crap, and its intials only stand for one thing..... how long it takes to boot into windows...........
All Motherfuckin Day.

And the Intel chip only cost twice as much... for what, a 5% increase in speed? In SOME applications.

(My Athlon Classic has been rock stable for two years now. Slightly overclocked also.)

I don't know about your setup but mine goes from power button to starting an application in about 13 seconds. 14 weeks without a reboot either. I like my AMD. Bang for the buck is the best.

Both are good processors, and much faster than what I have right now (pIII 650/100Mhz bus speed). Until the P4 Northwood (I think that's what they're called) came out, the P4s were a joke. AMD really hit it home when they introduced the Athlon line.

The AMDs might not be the super fastest processors out there right now, but hey... If I can get a really fast chip for quite a bit less than Intel, so be it!

My next pc I build will have a AMD Processor in it.

I haven't had an Intel CPU in my PC since 1996, when AMD came out with a 133Mhz 486 CPU (had an performance equivalent rating of a Pentium 75Mhz or something).

Been using AMD chips ever since, love it!

I have seen MANY a test that showed the AMD ran faster and out performed the intel of the same speed or even one speed faster....and for the price....you can't beat it....I have a couple that I am good friends with...she is a certified Microsoft Tech...and even SHE runs an AMD system.....I build my system about a year and a half ago with a 1.2 gig AMD T-bird.....it has never missed a beat....it rocks.

I like AMD, but my 850 MHz Duron has been a bit of a pain....I'm not sure if it's the MOBO or the chip, but I get VXD errors from Hell on startup. I've tried everything and can't get it fixed. Oh well....

I'd probably buy AMD again though...the price/performance ratio is too good to pass up.

You guys get all revved up but the website actually says AMD has won both rounds (not really sure why). Here are the real scores (we are 2 rounds into it now):

Round 1:

AMD - 20 - I imagine that it was actually 22 won and 20 lost
Intel - 22
Tie - 29

Round 2:

AMD - 26
Intel - 23
Tie - 22

There are two more rounds left. Currently AMD is slightly in the lead in round 3.

As for pricing ya for sure AND chips are cheaper. But when you weigh in a MOBO the AMD chipsets are generally 30-40% higher. The crap Duron that AMD came out was useless, they tried to pit againt the celeron which was somewhat of a victory for people who knew nothing about computing.

Oh and KC5, your kidding right, the Xeon processor is the wickedest thing going right now... are you sure they're Xeon's not coppermine???
