The straight scoop
First of all - it's IMPOSSIBLE to spot reduce fat from your body. It doesn't work that way, which is why those ab-tronics pieces of junk don't work for getting rid of fat.
Now, for the absolute BEST information you could ever want on fitness and bodybuilding I recommend 2 books:
Arnold Schwarzeneggers Bodybuilding Encyclopedia
and
Bill Phillips Body for Life
Arny's book is a great guide to teach you how to set up your workout regiment as well as a fascinating commentary on the history of bodybuilding. It's broken down into sections that focus on each particular body part, and he's got pictures and diagrams up the wazoo.
Body for Life is a GREAT book for teaching yourself on how to reprogram your body with health in mind. It's not all rabbit food and starving your self either. In fact, I ate MORE following his plan than I ever did when I was out of shape. The whole concept is to eat 6 times a day, 1 serving of protein and 1 serving of carbohydrates each time, as well as alternating days of weight lifting and cardio activity. Supposedly it's a three month plan you're supposed to follow but after the end of my 3 months I was so happy with my progress and I had gotten used to eating healthy 6 times a day that I just kept it up. (It's been almost a year since I started). It's kind of amazing, but I've convinced a lot of my friends to start the program too because they were so shocked with the progress I had made on my self. (I dropped 30 pounds in 3 months)
And if anyone is wondering on when they should be eating after working out, the answer is:
weightlifting - IMMEDIATLY after finishing your workout have a meal that includes both protein AND carbohydrates
cardiovascular/aerobic - 1 hour after finishing your workout
whether you are trying to lose weight or trying to gain muscle mass (or both), you MUST do both weight lifting AND cardio/aerobic activity, as well as live a HEALTHY lifestyle. When you do all three, you will improve MUCH faster than the juice monkeys at the gym who do nothing but flex their pecs all day and drink all their meals out of a bottle. (I'm living proof)
in both cases you should be working out on an empty stomach and the earlier in the day you can do it, the better.
I don't consider myself an expert in this, but I do like to think I have a fair bit of knowledge on the subject, so if any of you want more info on the books or just fitness in general, post here or PM me! Live well!

This is key if you want to gain mass, and also for those who don't. For those who don't want to gain mass, this is key because it helps to keep you system on track. After you develop a routine, your body will know that it's going to be feed after working out, and it doesn't have to store any food as fat from the previous meal--it will burn it off. Also, for those who want to lose weight, after exercising drink plenty of ICE cold water. Concept: you poor ice cold water into your body, you body now has to use energy to heat the stomach and water back up to normal body temperature, and fat is burned off during this process.

This is a very good point. If you're attempting to be the next Mr. Universe, don't worry about cardio. However, if you want to be physically fit, you need cardio. If you simply pump iron all the time, fatigue will be a common problem while doing physical activities. Cardio is to condition the muscles. Density will increase because of cardio. If you're pumping iron and drinking meals from a bottle, close to 50% of your muscle mass is going to be water. (...or do I have that backwards? too many things running through my mind right now while I'm at work.)

Hehe... Nor do I consider myself an expert.
I'll have to try those books you recommened.
For those seeking advice: don't overlook the mag Fitness & Muscle. I've gained invaluable information from this magazine.
Plus, someone asked about typical workout diets (diet as in regularly eaten food, not as in eating less diet), you can find numerou examples in this magazine for meals.
When deciding what to eat, don't take into consideration "taste" too much. I know I didn't. I was more concerned about what was good for my body and not what I wanted to eat. Both my wife and mother would ask me "how can you eat it like that," whenever they saw me eating tuna straight from the can. All I cared about was that I needed to eat something high in protein but would not take up a lot of space in my stomach. More room in my stomach, more food with good nutrional value I could stuff in (when I was eating three large meals a day, but also helps when eating six small meals a day). I believe that I saw more results in my body with this kind of attitude towards food. It's something I'm trying to help my wife with. She's too hooked on taste. "I don't like to drink water because it doesn't have any taste " Hrm.
Later on.
