Thats simply a personal opinion.
A direct rear view of a ZX3/ZX5 is pure nastiness, i agree. But anytime i see a ZX3 on the highway off to the side and a little bit in front, it seems downright pretty.
They look pretty decent from any side view.

The sedans and wagons (wagons especially) are a whole different story, and i don't particularly care for their looks either.

 

I have driven a "real" Focus. It sucked. I'm sorry there is just no other way to rate the ride that the ZX3 I test drove had. The engine was noisy, required lots of babying with the shifter, and rolled like a boat. The only car I test drove that was worse was the Civic LX (most of whose problems are remedied in the EX).

I have owned several Fords (Frickin Old Recycled Dodge) in my life and wanted to buy another one. After test driving the first ZX3 I asked to try another, hoping that there was just something wrong with the first one. After that failed we asked to test drive a ZX2 wondering if maybe that one was a little less annoying. Finally I asked to test drive an automatic. Then and only then was that annoying 2.0L Zetec engine tamed to the point of being tolerable. And I do not own automatics. So as you may be able to guess, no foci in my house.
