The 1.6L engine of the Protege
 

I was just wondering
I have the 1.6L version of the protege(which sucks in hp)

but anyway, I was wondering if there is any other car in the US that has the same engine capacity or smaller engine.

I am not planning to add crazy engine mods not to void the warranty on the car.

Any insights will be helpful

(all you guys with the 1.8L and 2.0L, I am sooooo jealous!;) )

Back in 1985 my father bought a brand new Suzuki SA 310 three banger... Suzuki cars were just introduced to our market. Don't recall the exact displacement but it was less than 1 liter. I think something around 980 CC...

It had 12 inch tires, manual transmission, 5 speed very long throw. The engine valves clacked like crazy, almost like an old volkswagen but all the 310's I heard had the same engine noise. Also those engines liked to run hot and it was normal for their temperature gauge to hover between 1/2 and 2/3

But it was fun to drive and he constantly got around 35-40 MPG...

In the states it was called the Pontiac Firefly.

The cooper mini has a MASSIVE 1.6l engine 115 hp and 110ft/lbs torqe. The Civic Crx has one of these too.

Thats about all I know of off the top of my head.

!!Mini Cooper!!, and it requires 91 octane to get those numbers.

hmm, but the cooper would whip my ass bad if we just accelerated from a light.

What really is crazy is that I see toyota corrolas gain on me from a stand still and it kills me. I know it is just the engine, but, it is quite possibly is that the 1.6L of the protege is the smallest engine in the market out there, isn't it so

so, other than the sunfire(which I see some still around, and they need to get off the road asap, they are a health danger because of the sh!t is gives out from the exhast)

We have the mini cooper, which has the same engine we do, but in a much smaller body.

What about kia's and hyandai's, are they a match?

it's a shame that mazda even offered 1.5 and 1.6's , for the main reason that there are no aftermarket for them and if you want to make them go ,, you have to boost up or use nos, and then the power you get , would be the same you get if you just swaped in a damn 1.8L ,... I mean a 30 hp jump from 92 hp to 122hp , in the BP and almost the same in the 3rd gens... honestly I wouldn't buy a 3rd gen or 2nd gen or p5 if it came with a motor smaller than a 1.8 or 2.0 .. never again ,, If you look at VW's , there smallest motor right now is a 2.0 granted a SOHC,, the displacement is still bigger...

thus the reason for my switch to a 1.8BP motor..

exception ,, the miata 1.6L ... this is the only mazda that I give the exceptions to .. that car , the miata, has so many parts for it , it is absurd,...

That's why I did like Bruce and got a 1.8l. Hopefully, I can get enough money this summer to drop it in.

but with gas prices these days, I'm not complaining with 35 MPG. I'll either get another car in a few years or just do an engine swap for real engine.

im with danny on this one, with gas pricing its not bothering me as much but sooner or later ill probably get a jspec when im tired of going so damn slow ... i can run faster than my damn car :rolleyes:

i think the geo metro is comp for the 1.6. lol and no most hyandais have the 1.8 litre in them, i got whooped by an elantra that was smoking like a bastard.

Currently available in the U.S. market, or ever?

I think that the smallest engine currently on the market is the 1.0L (995cc), 67 hp inline 3-cylinder in the Honda Insight.

The smallest ever? There might have been something smaller available at some point, but the smallest one I can think of is the 360cc (that's 0.36L) 22 hp air-cooled 2-cylinder in the late 60's Subaru 360. :D

I saw a 360 pickup while driving through Oklahoma a couple of years ago :D

there are actually lots of cars i've beaten with my protege 1.6L...my only mods are intake and exhaust.....Lanos,Metro,Accent,Cavalier(if auto),old Mustang LX 4-banger(lol),Rio,Honda Civic(non vtec),Ford Focus sedan SE's(no Zetec),just about any 4 banger pickup truck...theres a few more just cant think of them right now

Gotta admit, I think it would be cool to have a 360. The only problem is that I'd be afraid of being run over and crushed by some guy on a Harley. :eek:

Actually, a neat car to have would be a Honda 600 Z-Coupe. :bt:

so yall know , big rims makes your car go slower, unless they are super light, and it also makes your car burn more gas.
So you defeat the purpose of saving gas by installing big rims and tires ,,, so just go ahead and do the engine swap .. I learned then when I took off my 16's
