Strange noise.

I just got my new '06 Mazda3 from the dealer today and i was on the freeway going 100mph without noticing till i happen to look at my odometer. but i heard this loud and sometimes semi-quiet noise from my dash that sounded like on my old car when the heater blower went bad, what is the noise? should i ALREADY take the thing back to the dealer to check it out?

this is just what i heard so please dont quote me...

i really hope you didnt redline it or anything...because new cars and there engines are very delicate, therefore it takes time for it(the engine) to "break in" and actually perform at its peak. i hear about 10k miles or 6k, im not sure. But speeding like that with a new car can cause some long term damage to your engine and tranny...*not sure*

the thing is dude that the engine is still NEW....think about it when u wake up in the early morning, u dont feel like doing anything right away...its the same concept here. generally u should allow the engine to break in for about 400-500 miles, meaning u dont exceed higher speed limits...such as, lets say 60-65 miles an hour. its annoying at times, but when ur patient its worth it in the long run. i bought my m3 just about a year ago and it hasnt had any weird noise till now cuz i waited...i dont think u damaged it just yet but dont try speeding till its the right time...ask the dealer about how long the break in takes...good luck

Talking

yeah i intend to baby this thing as long as possible. i had just gotten it and have been used to driving my 1992 S10-Blazer 4x4. foot requires being a little heavier than in my new Mazda3 hehe..

i'm not really good buddies with the dealer, i gave half the dudes there a rough time to get the price to a reasonable amount. i'm an S-plan member so they were pretty much obligated to do so as well. i held them to their obligation basically, they're not too fond of me lol

thanks for all the advice though guys. i'll be roamin the forums checking out stuff about my new toy

one other thing i saw this marking on the car while being on the lot when purchasing the vehicle. i was afraid to say anything and to be honest i don't know why i think i just wanted to get in the new car and get to work.

it's about the width of a pencil eraser from end to end. just to give a size comparison. what can i do? should i go to the dealer?

about the scratch, u could try going back...i guess it wouldnt hurt. but if it doesnt work out with the dealer, then just get any polishing compound that removes scratches...i can't recommend one off the top of my head but u can go and check out the market. the best thing to do is, if the polish is harsh, is use car wax right after u have finish polishing the bad spot. that will restore the shine straight away. sumtimes the polish is strong cuz it has to remove whatever damage is there. lemme know what happens...hope it works out...

Despite what alot of people think or say, new cars these days don't really have a "break in" period. Basically, they are already broken in at the factory. They don't want anything to break during the warranty period. It should technically be safe to take it to 100 or redline it once in a while, but not for sustained periods of time. Mazda's motto is Zoom-Zoom and that's how they want you to drive the cars. So they make sure that the cars can handle what you throw at them (unless you are obviously abusing it like taking it past redline, etc). Peak performance of an engine is usually around 5-10k miles. That's when everything has "set in" I would say. It doesnt mean that it will be more reliable at those miles, it just means that it will make the most power usually by then.

About the noise, if it's not heard at or under the speed limit, the dealer is not going to drive the car to 100 mph to hear the noise. So basically if it's not making the noise at the speed limit, there is not much they are going to do for you.

Hope you are enjoying your M3, I know they are very nice cars, I wouldnt mind a hatch with the 2.3 Manual. I've installed a few Mazdaspeed cold air intakes and exhaust systems. They are zippy little cars, and look really smooth too.. (got to love that sexy front end).

First off you're definitely not the first person to drive fast by accident in this car, 'nuff said.

Second tell us about this sound. When does it occur (speed, gear, rpm). Does it still do it? Is it all the time, or only occasionally. Describe the sound and it's circumstances a little better for us. (since we don't know what the blower in your old car sounded like when it went bad  )

Third mazda does recommend to 'break in the engine' for the first 600 miles. In that 600 miles the big thing to not do is to drive consistantly at the same speed in the same gear. You can go fast, but just don't do it for more than say 5 minutes at a time. During the break in period don't use the cruise control. Just vary the speed and rpm's. Also try not to redline the car during this. If you were just going really really fast for a minute or so then it's probably okay.

Fourth breaking in engines. Yeah, okay so just because the engines are modern and they're well designed by a company that puts a sports car soul in every car does not mean they don't have to be broken in. There are still a lot of metal parts moving against each other, and part of the break in is wearing down extranious pieces so that everything moves smoothly. If you want to see when your engine is actually broken in take a sample of your oil and have it analyzed to judge the amount of metallic bits in it. Some cars don't fully "break in" until around 10k miles.

Fifth rpms. The 3 is equipped with a rev limiter that will cut out at 6500 rpms, so it isn't possible to 'go past the redline' on this car unless you start modifying the electronics. Also the car gets it's peak HP at 4200-4500 rpms, so you're not actually gaining anything else by bouncing off the limiter.... just more noise.

Sixth. The M3 is made by BMW. Mz3 please people.

Seventh. Why did looking at the the odometer make you realize you were driving too fast?

Eighth. Welcome and congratulations on buying a great car. What trim, color, model, options did you get? Any plans for the car?

2) the sound is consistant and it starts at about 85 - 100mph. it's kind of a whirring noise...like if something was spinning to fast and it starts to vibrate or something i guess and it sounds like it's coming from either the center area or in front of the passenger area (front seat in-dash). i hear it when it gets to about 3k RPM or a little higher

3) i now have ~750miles on it (i drive 90% highway with it. unfortuneately i'm not aware of any breaking in (dealer told me nothing about this, first time i heard about it was on here and basically don't push the 80mph was what i got from it). i've occasionally used cruise, gone about steady speeds when on freeways, interstates and some highways, passed some people here and there (never ever got past i'd say 5k RPM). i'm not much of a speed demon so if i do go fast it's only to pass or if i'm on the interstate i normally go about 70-80mph tops

7) cause i saw cars going by like they were standing still...and cause i made it to the half way point of my destination in less than half the time it normally takes (lol)

8) http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrow...der_id=1706266

i've got
- sirius pre-installed.
- sportronic (i think that's what they call it, it's the auto and manual combined. i'm sure that has some sort of draw back to it)
- 16" rims

plans:
- i already ordered the sharkfin to get rid of the granny antenna
- possibly actually using\activating sirius
- tint (20% or lower)

model is the S model

no idea what the "trim" is...so can't tell ya on that lol

So is the sound coming from the engine, or does it seem like it's something rattling in the dash? Is it present at any speed above 3k, or just once you pass 85?

Like I said with the break in it's not necessarily "don't drive fast". It's just don't drive at the same speed, or same rpm constantly. You're pretty much past what mazda recommends, though you could try alternating for a few hundred miles to try and distribute some wear/tear on the engine/tranny.

Did you order the functional sharkfin from www.sharkfinantenna.com? It's a really sharp mod (though I don't really like it on the 5-door, only the sedan). You said the sirius is already installed, right? Where did they put the antenna? Several people at the mazda3forums have hidden their sirius antenna underneath the sharkfin, for a cleaner look. I can find the applicable threads if you need/want them.

Trim..... I was meaning i vs. s. Model I was referring to 4 vs. 5 door... though I suppose if you got a 5-door then it's automatically a "s".
