I want to shave 1/8 off of the head. I know I would have to use high octane gas to aviod knocking, but if anyone could help with some other pros/cons or how stupid this I dea is feel free to leave one.

Hi local bama guy.

don't do it. Totally not worth it. If you'd like more power we can discuss better options for you.

First things first...

1. How fast do you REALLY want to go?

and

2. How much money do you ACTUALLY have to spend?

answer those two questions and I (we) can help you out further. There's a lot of smart people here. We've all been around the block a while also.

what part of Bama? I'm in the Alabaster/Montevallo area.

In total I want to get an added 100hp over stock, but I wanna stay NA. I am not rich either, lets just put it that way. I live on ft. rucker which is close to dothan al. right now I want to start out with air/fuel improvement and perfection, and no I don't mean just bolting a good old cold air intake, since that seems to be the popular fix (in part). I am saving my money right now cuz one of my big steps to improvement and smoothness is going to cost me $700. I want to buy and install the distributerless ignition box with 4 coil packs that MSD makes for the direct injected spark ignition cars like the mazda3. I heard a lot of good things about this MSD box specifically pretaining to the mazda3 which includes (proven) 15hp gain and an added 3 miles per gallon on your gas milage. anyway, any tips on some air/fuel management/improvement upgrades that can help and aren't to costly would be greatly appriciated. xTHANKSx

Well, I hope you are referring to 100 brake horsepower over stock, because 100 wheel horsepower over stock, without using Forced induction (Turbo, Nitrous, Supercharger) has not been achieved, and if it ever will be, it is going to cost LOTS of money.

If you are talking about brake horsepower... that would be 260 to the brake = roughly 213whp (assuming 18% drivetrain loss)

Right now there are not That many N/A upgrade for the car, even fewer for the 2.0L.
The highest N/A Numbers without Engine Management That I have seen are in the high 150's and low 160's to the wheels. And that consists of..
-Cold air intake
-Advanced ignition timing mod
-Cat-Back with Race pipe
-Buddy Club Condensor

Granted, that isnt alot of work, but everything past that is going to make the wallet feel alot lighter.

Theoretically...(With gracious estimates)
If you had the above parts plus...

- Header + deleted first Cat (~15whp)
- Cosworth Intake Manifold (~15whp)
- Microtech Standalone management system (~20whp)

You would be over 200whp N/A.. But you would be spending more money than you would be spending on a turbo kit, and getting ATLEAST 200whp.

So basically what I'm saying is, It's impossible to get near 200whp without spending alot of money.

you're going WAY out of your way by trying to re-engineer the ignition system on that engine.

You need to save your pennies for the cosworth NA packages but be prepared to spend more money and make less power than a similar turbo kit.

Also, a turbo kit will be bolt on while the NA packages from cosworth will require cam swaps, balance shaft removal, etc.
