Any idea if engine break in requires anything special? Or will the standard no more than 40 mph in all gears not staying at one engine speed for more than 10 minutes at a time, change oil at 900-1000 miles be good enough?

 

i didnt do anything special when i broke in mine, and it worked out just fine. dont dog it, i kept it below 4k rpm at all times, and never drove it hard for the first 2k mile. i changed oil at 1k, 3k, and then like normal from then on. i didnt do anything along the lines of not keeping the engine at the same speed for more than 10 mins. as long as you dont race anyone, you should be fine, haha. thats what worked for me, and it should be fine for you.

 

pssshh i didnt have a break in period my car just rolled 1000 miles yesterday and ive already topped it out three times and autocrossed i try to shift around4k-5k just driving around the street and auto-x i stayed on the redline alot but still seems fine.......i am not worried warranty will replace any thing bad that is why i didnt worry about the breakin period....btw i had like 500mi. the first time i topped it out

 

this was my second car, and favourite!
i think i lasted about maybe 100 kms before i opened it up to see what kind of ***** it had.
and i changed my oil at 5000kms.
and like jzoomer said, the warranty will cover it if anything goes wrong. lol.

 

Yeah lol i got videos of jzoomer on my phone, he was doin some work on that track with only 1k and seemed to be running like a champ. Ide recommend and oil change around 1k though for sure.

I just bought a m3 this past weekend. Only have 80 miles on it. I need to make a trip to Philly from New York City next week. Is it a bad idea to take the m3 and break it in? It will be a lot of millage all at once and I will be driving above 80mph most of the way. Is that a bad way to break in the engine?

 

Considering a lot of "new" 3's and Speed 3's have 100's of miles of abuse from test drives, doesn't this ruin the break in a little bit?

 

To be honest guys.

The term "breaking in" was used with old cars, since the machining process wasn't as refined and the parts needed time to wear into each other without damaging each other.

Today the manufacturing of parts are so refined that they work on micron scales, and running in isn't actually necessary (remember that youre engine gets pushed to its limits on a dyno even before the engine has been placed in a car).

When I got my car, I was told by the dealer not to keep it at the same speed too long and not to use the manual shift mode (with the automatic transmission) for 500 miles. They also said not to accelerate or brake too hard. After 500 miles, I drove how I wanted and haven't had a problem.

 

It all comes down to the each persons own believes basically

I prefer to break my engines in hard, and every time my performance is much better afterwards than when doing a babying break in.

What does your manual say?

If there's nothing in it about break in then don't worry and drive it how you want.

If there are recommendations for break-in then follow them.

That way if something goes awry, take it to the dealer and reference the manual. It's your only documented instructions for the car.

BTW, I wouldn't trust anyone at the dealership for mechanical advice. The manual is far more trustworthy.
