Dax, YES! For more than 6 years that I know about, and on the Mazda 3 for sure, cars automatically check for a missing or bad gas cap seal. If you fail to put the gas cap on or if the gas cap is leaky - you will get a check-engine-light.

VToh, what's so sensitive?

Knock on wood, my '3 was put together in July 04, I bought it in Sep 04, I've got a little over 5K miles on it and no troubles yet. My only disappointment is the gas mileage is 27mpg, I expected to get about 30mpg or better. BTW - I could be fooling myself, but I think that the gas mileage improved a tad after the first oil change - I wonder if they use a thicker oil for the initial fill? Then again, I also put on different tires, so that could make a difference too...

i apologize for not reading the previous 15 pages in this thread before posting this.

I had some problems last month that i thought were cold weather related. two occurances on very cold mornings the battery seemed to die very quick trying to start it. also, the idle was dipping a bit low, and would occasionally sputter while sitting at a traffic light. that problem progessed into the occasional stall.

took it to the dealer, and they quickly determined that the fuel pump wasn't maintaining enough pressure. the purge valve also had to be replaced. thankfully all under warranty.

Crashed Up 3/5

Hello,
this might not go here, but, I just survived a heck of a crash in my '04 3/5. A knucklehead in a 02 Cavalier ran a stop light and hit me in the passenger side front corner, fender and wheel. My air bags went off and my wife and daugher and I got out fine. My car looks bad in the front corner, a hunk of bumper was hanging off the headlight lens was broken, although the lights were intact I think and some damage to the fender and wheel well and a flat tire, but not too bad.

The Cavalier was messed up! His bumber was shattered, radiator broke, both front fenders smashed and the hood was crinkled like paper. there was blue plastic everywhere from his car as well as antifreeze and windsheild wiper fluid.

I'll tell you, we were lucky he did not hit either passenger's doors it may have been much different, but my car held up much better than his POS, that's for sure. I sure hope my trusty local body shop puts it back together as well as it seemed built.
Cheers

WOW! i am glad to hear you and your family are fine. someone i knew had a crash in their protoge and it was bad. it didn't even look like a car. but they were fine with some brusing and a broken collor bone. thats why i got the mazda 3. i am glad to hear how well it faired. considering my crash was the driver front corner and it cost 4grand to fix. the head light was near $400 and the mounting braket was 170 something. good thing it was the other gys fault. that was against an '87 SAAB.

Again, glad to hear you and your family is fine.

Post crash thanks

Hey,
Thanks for the nice comments about my crash. I'm driving a Kia Rio rental which makes me miss my 3/5 even more. Turns out the owner's insurance was canceled. We though there was a problem since she had Safe Auto, but apparently did not pay up and got cancelled. Oh joy. Does anyone know at what point a car is considered "totalled"? I think mine took a 35- 40 mph hit on the passenger's front wheel mostly so I'm concerned about all the suspension and related equipment. Lots will need replaced. Thanks again!

In my crash i hit somewhere around 25 to 30 plus what ever the other guy was doing. it bent my fram. to my suprise they can apparently straiten car frames now, because it is a unibody design. wanna know how they do it, if you don't do not proceed to read. they take some hooks, hook it on to the fram and pull it in oposite directs with large chains and such. sow my car constitly pulls to the right and everything rattles. but it still wasn't considered total. but i live in california in santa barbara county where everything is gay like that.lol. good luck man hope there isn't no internal damage.

Wow. Glad you guys were alright. Hope your 3 is as good as new in no time!

Has anyone had trouble with their gas gauge? Have only had my 3s 5-dr. for a few weeks, but on a couple of really cold New England mornings, the gas gauge has stuck at about 1/4 tank when it was truly 3/4 to full. Scared the crap out of me the first time.

Yikes, that sounds bad! I really trust my body shop since it's family-owned and they all go to my church. I expect them to be honest and do a good job. I have not found out yet what will be done, but I hope to today. It burns me up that the jerk who hit me was driving without a license and was driving an uninsured car. I know I will be out of pocket for a while with a car that will probably never be the same. Thanks for the info.

Yes, unfortunately, every story I've ever heard about badly scrunched cars that were fix ends with "I wish the insurance company would have declared it a total loss". Sorry for your troubles. Thank God you were not badly hurt!
