Mazda 3 vs Acura RSX

How would you guys compare the Mazda 3 GT to the RSX (base model, not the 210hp Type-S)? Any thoughts?

honda build quality is probably best in the class but bang for the buck you won't find a better car than a mazda3. Every reviewer has said the new 3 is best in class.

That's kinda my take on it too. Though, as reliable as Honda's are, I just don't think you get enough for the money you spend. Yes, the Type S has 210hp, but the base and premium models have 160hp like the 3 (though probably a faster because of the torque at lower rpm), and the options package on the Mazda, in my opinion is far superior. Also, the RSX is admitedly I nice looking car, but the 3 is more sleek looking, and, well, not as boring. But the thing that bugs me about Honda is the attitude of "it's a Honda" to explain the higher prices rather than selling the actual contents/aspects of the car. Best example of this is the fact that for the money you're paying (compared to the 3), the Honda still has those cheap *** door handles. Doesn't sound like much, but man, I find that almost unacceptable.

I know what you mean. The Acura RSX type S is a very nice car, it came first place out of 5 cars (Chevy Cobalt SS, Saturn Ion, Dodge SRT-4, Sabaru). But how can they justify a price tag of 34000$ before taxes? The base model goes for 27000$ That 7000$ more than I paid for my car, the 3 definetely has more bang for the buck!

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the 3 handles better than the base model RSX. I took a friend of mine that has a TSX (really sharp looking car in my opinion) for a ride in the 3 this past weekend, and he was quite amazed by it's handling. I pushed the car decvently taking curves, and no tire squealing (even more amazing considering the stock Goodyear's are really nothing to write home about in terms of performance tires). He said the steering wheel, and overall feel of the car really had a rally-car feel to it.

No doubt Acura's are very well-made, and have an excellent track record (especially the V-Tech engine). And I did seriously consider getting an RSX (base model, not the Type-S) when I was shopping around for a new car last year. But Mazda's record is pretty good too. Maybe not on all their models, but certainly Protege's record is close to being on par with Civic's (and you always got more for your dollar with the Protege compared to the Civic, especially in the last 4 years).

Come to think of it, on Saturday, it will be exactly 1 year since I purchased the 3!

also...this isn't major but can be a BIG headache...

the rsx (any model) has real long doors. It makes it VERY hard to get in and out of when people are parked next to you.

before i bought my 3 i looked at the rsx type s. besides not being comfortable in the car it wasnt that impressive to drive either. i am 5'11" and had to almost get out of the car to reach the seat belt behind me, it was in a weird position. i have traveled long distances in my 3 and never got uncomfortable. plus the 3 gets better gas mileage and has a ton more room. as far as speed i threw an intake on my 3 and out ran an rsx easily. handling is the same if not better with the 3 as well. both are really stif but the 3 seems more stable.

Thanks Axela. Your comments really demonstrate the advantages and overall value-money of the Mazda 3.
