Gas Mileage Final/Ultimate thread

Hey guys, I know this has been done before, sharing our gas mileage. However, often it left many more questions, or for at least. IE "I get 20-30mpg", then I wonder, what transmission? When do they shift(if its manual)? etc... this way we can accurately compare and see what may be wrong if anything with our cars as far as fuel goes.

I'm sure you guys know how to calculate or average the mpg but just incase here's a common method:

1. fill up your gas tank until the nozzle stops automatically(do not pump more, just stop when its full by default)

2. set your odometer(trip-o-meter) to 0, then drive around

3. the next time you fill up your gas(get a good drive at least maybe 100 miles or more, the more the better idea you get, maybe even until your gas light appears) fill up your gas until it stops automatically again, then check the pump to see how many gallons(liters if your not from the US) you put in before the nozzle "clicked"

4. now do some simple math, divid the miles on your trip-o-meter by the number of gallons you just put in, and then bam, you got your miles per gallon.

I know you guys aren't retards, but just incase, to keep consistency in this one.

haha, oh yeah, and if your wondering....."why haven't you filled it out yourself?!?!" It's because my tigrey or black 3i manual hasn't come home yet.... but I am in love with the car, and have been setting an eye out for it ever since it came out. Hopefully by the end the year I shall finally get it. But I like this forum, you guys are cool and a tight knit community.

Quick question a bit off topic.

About how much gas do I have when the low gas light comes on. I know I saw it in the manual, but I cannot seem to find it again. The reason is because it is my first car, before I drive my mom's or my dad's and when it was time to fill up I would switch to the other car so my parents had to fill up.

So now a lot i get the orange light, and I ususally c it when I get about 2 lines left to empty, and sometimes I wonder If ill make it back from wherewere in the amount I have left.

Ive managed to pull off nearly another 50 miles on the highway after my light came on on a road trip. At that point, it was well past the empty mark and probably wouldnt have gone much further...didnt realise it was that far to the next gas station!!

I also realize that when the gas stops pumping (when its full) the meter goes way off to the top past the F about 3-5 lines more. So maybe it is off by about that much, 50 miles...

Im not sure and its my guess. So do not bother me if you ran out of gas due to this.

Well the actual fuel light is just a reminder to get gas...it doesnt mean if you dont get gas in the next 20 feet that your car will roll over and die. Mine comes on on the last line before the E...i usually drive it another 20 or so miles after that light comes on...theres no doubt in my mind that i will be perfectly fine only driving another 20 miles after that light comes on.

When the gas light comes on, there is still 10 litres of gas left in the gas tank. I usually fill up soon after mine comes on and I fill up to 45-47 litres. And the most I've done is 490 kms on 45 litres (80% highway driving). I have a 2.3, automatic. I don't push the car very harshly because it's not a Porsche or a Ferrari!

Why the heck would you wanna run low on gas. To low is not good for your fuel pump or your injectors. Why play a game of how far can I go when the light comes on. DOH !
