Lightbulb first oil change

just purchased a 2006 mazda 3 manual and the manufacturer says that the first oil change should come at 5000. I have owned a 96 monte carlo and a 90 corsica and both had to have the first oil change at 1500 miles. Wuts up, are these newer engines just better or is the oil better. Also, did anyone else go the whole 5000 before having their first oil change or did they do it earlier. WHat ever happened to the break in period for a car?

cars today are pretty much broken in when they are delivered to the dealer....with better engine building processes, and better quality oil, cars also go longer without a change
