Engine light and AT Light Comes On

Engine light and AT Light Comes On
Hello there,
Ok, so I don't know much about cars at all and am mechanically challenged! Now that I have that out of the way, the Engine light on my 2010 Mazda 3 always comes on when I start the car. The AT light comes on while I'm driving and from what it looks like it appears that the car is unable to shift to 4th gear. When I turn the car off, AT light goes off as well. Both the Engine light and AT light problems started at the same time so I'm guessing they must be related. I have 191,000 Kms on my car and since I live in Canada, my car is exposed to extreme cold weather.
So, is it a major problem? There's really no point in me spending $1000s to fix my car as this car is not worth it!
