does anyone know?

hello everyone, I am new to the site and new to the car. just purchased it earlier this week with a blown motor. its a 3s 2.3 n/a engine.

So my first question is will a 2006 3s engine fit this 2005. I found one for not so cheap, so I don't want to make a mistake by buying it and it not working for my swap. the guy from the salvage that is selling it to me says that it won't fit, but so far what I have searched there is really nothing different.

As far as I know there were really only very small differences in the motor itself between years, even then the only thing I can think of between '05 and '06 was the addition of VVT on the '06 2.0 L model.

Is the car a MTX or ATX? If you're looking at a long block then that could make a difference as the ATX on the 2.3 L model changed between '05 and '06 from a 4-speed to a 5-speed.

its a five speed, so no I am not worried about the tranny either. A guy from a mazda dealership told me that the only real difference in the 2.3 motors from the 04-05 to the 06 and newer was the emissions package (which I have no idea what he meant by it) I figured maybe the sensors are different or the ecu is different, but if that's the case its not really that big of a deal to me because I live in a state that there is no vehicle inspections, so I woudn't have to worry about passing an emissions test. Do you know if the engine wiring harness is the same, if so I think I am going to take a chance because I can get the ecu for $50 extra and the engine from this 06 only has 30k miles on it

I'm not really sure if the harness is the same. I know the PJB (fuse/junction box inside the car) is different between the '05 and '06 but I'm not sure about the ECU.
