De-activating the "belt minder"?

I just took delivery of my 05 Mazda 3 and I see in the manual that the chime to remind you to secure the seatbelt can be de-activated by the dealer (page 2-20). It can also be re-activated at any time........where is this switch? Thanks.......

There is no switch. To get this turned on or off requires a computer plugged into the diag port under the dash. You will need to get this done at the dealer, but most of them won't do it due to liability and or insurance reasons.

An easier fix is to go to your nearest pick-a-part salvage yard and score some buckles off of a late model Ford Contour/Mercury Mistake. Plug the buckle in place of the belt and chime is no more. Simply unfasten the buckle when you want to use the belt.

I seen a thread like a couple week ago and everybody ripe that person apart...harsh.

Anyways I haven't look at it properly but I did notice that there was a plug with 2 wires at the bottom of my seat beat bucklet (between the seat and the console). I am willing to bet connecting those 2 wires together would closed the circuit and give the impress of the seatbelt being buckle. It not rocket science but if I has looking to deactivate the belt minder that where I would start but since I like using my seatbelt it doesn't bother me. LOL

I too wear my seatbelt but just like to start the car first as soon as I get in and get comfortable and buckle up while it warms up without having to hear BONG BONG BONG.......

Also, if I sit in the car at idle with the seatbelt off, like waiting for a few minutes for a friend with the AC on.....it chimes.....even in neutral with the Pkg Brake on.....BONG BONG BONG.......annoying.

The buckle trick is a good idea but since I use the belt it would be a pain to remove and replace each time. The manual says the dealer "can" de-activate it.....using the method TomH has described I am sure.....but I guess they might say no.....I will give them a call.

Anyone certain about those wires under the seat? If I disconnect the plug that is there and find that connecting the seatbelt has NO effect on the chime, I guess that will answer the question about what those wires do........but I would hate to do anything that would compromise the deployment of any airbags or anything though......messing with wires in todays complicated electrical systems can be dangerous.

This has been brought up before, but I'll say it again. Zoom Zoom asked how to deactivate the seatbelt buzzer, he DID NOT request to be preached to for not wearing his seat belt.

All of you with the "holier than thou" attitudes need to keep quiet. He will wear the seat belt if he wants, not because somebody told him too.

Wow......the Mazda representative was very helpful....even called my dealership direct. Unfortunately, since they are privately owned, they can make the decision NOT to shut off this chime. Nice.

I called several dealerships in my area.....same answer. All the lawsuits in this country are making everything that is and was cool a thing of the past. Now I am determined.........F THIS! I am getting this thing turned off.

One dealership was helpful (at least) by suggesting I deal with a certain location that is a dealership OWNED by Mazda (and/or Ford) themselves. This way, if Mazda themselves agree that it is the owners decision to have the chime off or on I have a better chance (or some chance) of getting an OK there.

I asked over there......service guy was nice......I am waiting for a call back from his supervisor as to whether or not this is going to happen.

Any other suggestions? Anyone know about the wires?

Tom, you need to relax and pull out whatever is up your ***. I was just joking around... jesus.

Zoom Zoom, you can do whatever the hell you want mang. I find it just as annoying, but with being in a car accident myself (almost lost my leg because I wasn't wearing a seatbelt) it's a reminder that I wish they started putting in cars a long time ago.

Anyway, keep us in the know about what's goin on w/ dat. Also, have you tried calling around private shops that might have a diagnostic tool available for the 3's to see if they can do it if you sign a waiver that relinquishes all responsibility from them?

BBM, I can assure you that I am quite relaxed, and that there is nothing up my ***. As I stated, this arguement was brought up on here before, and most people gave the same answer as you, which wasn't very helpful.

You aren't going to get ANYONE to wear a seatbelt by preaching to them, if anything, that will just make them want to wear it that much less. I am of the mind that people need to worry less about others and more about themselves, it would make this forum, among other things, a much better place to "hang out".

Sorry if I sound(ed) like an ***, but this "I know what's better for you than you do" crap is getting old.

The dealers would do nothing and the Mazda owned dealer never called back (as of yet) so I just went to a junkyard and cut the rear buckle off of a new wrecked Focus.....click.....no bong. I will just remove and replace whenever I want to secure my seatbelt until I get my hands on the dealers computer through a connection or whatever.

Too bad the dealer controls that computer......seems like a bunch of parameters can be adjusted and customized with it to tailor the car the way we, as individuals, want it. Sounds like we should all be able to sit down at delivery time and set the car up the way we want it.

Next on the list for me is......I want to be able to put my fog lamps on whenever I like.......not just when my headlamps are on. I want the fog lamp switch to be it's own circut independent of the headlight switch.....on turns on the fog lamps no matter what. Any suggestions? Post here but I may also start a new thread if I find a suitable discussion title.

Technically, there is a "button" but, unfortunately, the dealers seem to have their finger on it and not yours.

Quoted from another board I frequent:

Hello, this is a Service Bulletin from Mazda North American Operations
Irvine, CA 92618-2922.

I give you the whole text.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2004 MAZDA3
DESCRIPTION
The seat belt minder is a supplemental warning to the seat belt warning function. This feature provides an additional
reminder to the driver that the seat belt is not fastened by an intermittent, audible beep sound and flashing
of the seat belt warning light in the instrument cluster.
The seat belt minder can be deactivated either temporarily or over the long term and can be restored again, if
the customer wishes. This bulletin outlines the deactivation procedure. (Note: The seat belt warning function is
not deactivated.)
The Owner’s Manual has been updated to include this information.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE: Although the belt minder can be deactivated by customer choice, it is recommended the customer to
leave it activated as an additional safety feature. Ask them to have it reactivated before selling the
vehicle to a new owner too, to get the maximum effect.

TEMPORARY DEACTIVATION
To temporarily deactivate the belt minder, turn the ignition switch to ON, fasten the driver’s seat belt for about 2
seconds or longer, then unfasten it within 20 seconds. The belt minder will be deactivated temporarily, until the
ignition switch is turned to ON next time. (Temporary deactivation can be cancelled by turning the ignition switch
OFF, then ON.)

LONG-TERM DEACTIVATION
To deactivate the belt minder long-term, change the configuration of the Instrument Cluster using WDS.
1. Identify the vehicle, and make sure the vehicle specification screen appears.
2. Select “Module Programming” and press tick.
3. Select “Programmable Parameters” then “Warning Lamps/Chimes” and press tick.
4. Select “Belt Minder” – IC (Instrument Cluster)” then “Disabled” and press tick.
5. Turn the ignition switch to OFF and press tick.
6. Verify operation.

-------

Obviously, a long term solution would be to take it to a dealer, but for the time being, if you know you'll be leaving the car, or driving a short distance without using the seatbelt, you can use the temporary fix.

That's all I could really find.
