Is 3 a TOTALLY NEW design comparing to protege

I am very happy with my 94 protege(175K) and willing to replace it with a 3 sometime this summer.

Just wondering the evolution. Is Mazda 3 just a different name of protege 04? I am asking coz I am little worried about the reliability of a totolly new design!

it is a 100% new design....ground up/everything.....it's also a GREAT car and I'm debating buying one for my wife,.

it is a 100% new design...but so was EVERY new design on the Protege...1st to 2nd to 3rd gen....Mazda does a redesign every 5 years...so in a way it is like a 4th gen Protege
