04 Mazda 3s 4-door and towing

I have to move across country in about 2 months and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with towing using their Mazda 3. I know 3rd parties manufacture hitches, but at the same time Mazda doesn't recommend towing. Overall, I probably have close to 800-1000 lbs that I would need to tow plus the weight of a trailer. Will this be too much for my car? Will it kill my engine? I plan on trading the car in next spring, but I would still need the vehicle for the next 7-9 months so I don't want to wreck it either. For it's age, it's got relatively low mileage (under 120K).

As an alternative, I could rent a vehicle and possibly tow the Mazda on a trailer, the vehicle didn't have sufficient ground clearance to ride on the ones available from U-Haul etc. Does anyone know if this has changed?

If anyone has any better suggestions I'm 100% open to them. TIA.
