P5 got whipped by Neon

I saw my freind in his Neon race a silver P5 at the Sunshine dragstrip last night.

My freinds Neon smoked that P5. What gives. The friends Neon is a 10th Ann ACR with a dual exhaust.

"What gives" is that Neons are fast. Quite fast. This tends to suprise folks in the import racing scene, who often ignore domestics. In the small FWD 4-cylinder stock classes, Neons have ruled the SCCA autocross scene for years; it has only been recently that an Integra Type R has posted a faster time at Nationals than a Neon ACR. Grassroots Motorsports magazine just did a track test with a new ACR vs. an MP3, VW Golf GTI 1.8T, Sentra SE-R Spec V, Honda Civic Si, and a Focus SVT, and it smoked all of them in their autox test by a significant margin.

In a drag race, a 130 hp, 2800 lb P5 *should* lose to a 150 hp, 2450 lb ACR. You do the math

i was watching some guys race and this dude shows up in a nonturbo 2nd gen Rex, well he decides to race a Z24, the Z24 just had a CAI and an exhaust and he blew away the Rex, lbasically like he was standing still, was pretty funny cause the Rex just left

Figures they would test the Civic Si rather than the Type R, wouldn't want the poor Neon along with the others looking bad seeing that they tested the best of everything, still makes no sense to test the Si, bring in the Type R, its in the Same class of cars. I am sure stock for stock it will outhandle all those cars, I don't read articles in magazines anymore, the comparisons that they do are a joke, might as well threw a Civic EX in there, its the same suspension

Yea, the 2nd gen N/A Rex's take a lot of heat because they really aren't that fast. Before I turbocharged my car, I had one pull up on me on the highway, we launched from a 70mph roll, I was 3-4 carlengths ahead by 100mph and still pulling. They are great fun cars though, but if you plan on modding one get the Turbo, save yourself a lot of headaches

btw, CarguyCw: I was not dissing on you in any way in my first post, just stating a fact You can't compare a Top of the Line (for that model) car against a Civic Si which is not Top of the Line Honda/Acura by far. Sure it has the B16a2 in it, but that has no affect on handling. I think you would agree that they should have atleast tested an Integra Type R, that actually has a tuned suspension and is setup for Autocross. The only major advantage the Si has over the EX is the b16a2 performance wise.

The test car was a the new hatchback 2.0L non-VTEC Si, not the old B16A-powered coupe. And IMHO, I think that testing a Neon ACR against an Si is a perfectly valid comparison considering that an ACR costs about the same as a Civic *LX*. The ACR is not "top of the line" by any stretch. It is a cheap economy car (msrp $15,095) with a good engine and really, really nice suspension And re-read my first post- the Neon ACR is virtually equal to an ITR around an autocross course. The ITR needs 45 additional hp, ABS, and a helical limited slip to just barely beat an ACR

BTW I do not mean to start a long bench-racing smackdown (esp. one with no Protege content) but an ACR is a damn quick car. Quicker than many import racers are willing to admit. Faster than any stock Civic, non-R Integra, or Prelude around an autocross course. I should know- I sold my old 91 CRX Si autocross car becuase I was tired of being spanked by Neons

guys I have beaten lots of these neons.

My friend has a 10th Ann ACR and I always beat him.

The last one I got was Wednesday night. it was a R/T DOHC, had a custom throttle body, Iceman intake, with K&N cone. Magnacore coils and wires. Venom cpu with 50 hp shot.

I ran him and beat him, I ran a 10.6 @ 64. He ran a 10.7.

I assume you are talking about the 1/8th and yes in a straight line the neons don't shine but I can agree that the suspension is good on em, I have done a little research

i own a 2000 1.8L lx
and on the 1/8 my best time was 10.111
if i work on the damn reaction time and reduce it to around .100,ill be in the 9.9xx
my friend bought my old neon and installed headers and removed the cat.
he got a whopping 9.027!!!!!!!!that is f#cking crazy.

i dont know what is wrong with you guys with the MP3 and the neon, but your cars can go alot faster than what you have posted (10.6 and 10.7)

i assure you.

If someone pulls a 10 second 1/8th mile in a DOHC Neon they cannot drive or they added a shift **** that addes 7 inches of height to the shifter and it takes a full second to shift.

I really don't belive these R/T neon times.

I know of a older guy, that has custom throttle body, Venom CPU, Iceman intake, K& N, Magnacore coils and wires, He also has a 50 HP shot of NOS and he runs a best of 9.8 on NOS. and 10.7 without. His car is flawless with only 26,000 on it.

I think you guys are smoking something

NEON

I used to have a 95 neon....I had exhaust and other little mods

done to it. The thing would smoke my friends MP3 and v6 auto

camaro and firebirds and stuff like that. Horrible car though....Paid

3,500 for it....had 74,000 miles and in 6 months put 2,400 in

repairs. Including the head gasket, fuel pump, water pump, fuel

tank, speedometer....(gear in tranny cost 1200...bs got ripped).

Car was pretty quick but not worth it over all .......don't buy a

neon.
