Chris,

Congratulations on the exellent story! I must say I was very excited to see an article about the Protege in GRM, especially because it focuses on autocrossing. You included exellent and helpful information. I found it extremely enjoyable. After reading the article, I must say I did wonder about its origin. I mean, why an article about a car with few followers. Now I know. Incidntally, are you a professional writer?

(snip)...
Thank you for the kind words...I did my best, with help from fellow forum members, the story turned out good.

Not a pro writer...yet.

David,

I can only imagine what you would have done in one of those cars (no insult intended to the protege).
Had I not made the tactical error of not having enough gas on my 3rd North course run (actually, I didn't have enough gas for any of my runs, but the 3rd one was where it cost me), I probably would have been at least 7th. Doh!

Also, do you ever come to the San Diego events (nesxt event is Nov 10). Art Rinner, Darryl and Vincent Wong often come down from LA and take all the trophies. Vincent is amazing. Come down and take him down in the Protege.
The powers-that-be in San Diego won't let me come play (at least until next year). No new number cards will be issued this year in San Diego, so if you don't have one already, you're out of luck. And only about 15 per event will be issued at events next year. If you are the 16th new person, tough sh!*. Nice attitude they have down there in San Diego, eh?

I will be down there for the National Tour, and I guess I have to come down to the two SCNAX events (put on by Art Rinner and Randy Chase...as a new club in San Diego) to support the San Diego chapter of the club.

Yes, the article is in the December issue of Grassroots Motorsports...It'll hit newsstands on Nov. 12...

You should buy the November issue anyway. Hell, you just go and get subscription.

I'd heard about this months ago (May), submitted a bunch of info and pics to David Wallens (per his request), set GRM up with Jesse for photos, have autocrossed the Protege for 12 years now, running National Tours and Pros for the last 10, hit every National event on the West Coast the last 3-4 years, and even won the first trophy for a Protege in Topeka since 1993, IIRC (and my GF also got a trophy), and all I got was half a sentence at the very end of the article...but I'm not bitter. At least I got a picture and a mention in North American Pylon.

And with the Speed World Challenge gaining in popularity with the successes of the Protege this year, the market should be on the up and up...

Well, I'm a pretty quiet guy, and the Protege is a pretty non-descript car (sorry), and up until this year, I haven't had much impact other than on the West coast, so... I guess they didn't have room for Chris Hartman's little bio on Will Kalman and I.
