3G Protege: Variable Intermittent Wipers

I've got a 2002 ES with intermittent wipers. My question is: do they make a steering column wiper control bar that allows for variable intermittence or am I stuck with the single setting? When I look at the stock one on there now, it looks like the end was designed to allow for a rotating variance control. Any info is appreciated.

that's where the control for the P5 rear window wiper is

mopho November-16th-2002 07:54 PM

It is rediculous that the Protege does not have variable intermittent wipers, I think nearly every car does these days. Even my old Ford Escort had it. This is my biggest gripe about the car.
Anyhow, if you push the wiper stalk upward it will give a swipe without spraying fluid

Why would you need a power lock button on the passenger side when you have a remote on your key? why give the passenger the opportunity to lock your keys in the car? I think it is great that there is no button for the passenger, I used to hate when they would lock the doors on me

because ANOTHER feature we don't have.....is the doors auto locking once the car gets to like 15 MPH.....and I don't usually get in and immediately lock my doors......my WIFE does....since she likes the doors locked....and it buggs her that we don't have the auto locking feature like our last car did....and when WE get in the car...SHE can't lock the doors...or at least HER door....so she has to have ME do it...and its a distraciton....I wish ALL the doors had their own switch for the frickin doors!

Rider69 November-16th-2002 10:38 PM

HERE'S THE HOW-TO

I know for a fact that the stalk and control assembly from an MPV will plug right in and work fine for our P5s as I have checked it out with our MPV. The module can be purchased from the dealership for about $110 but I am not sure of the part number. Basically, the stalk and the module is one unit. Remove the steering wheel column covers and there are like 3 or 4 screws that have to be removed and then the module unplugs. Drop in the new one and replace covers. Should take about 15 minutes to do. If you use the MPV one (maybe the tribute too) you can have variable speed intermittent wipers along with retaining control of the rear wiper. So I would assume that the ones out of a Millenia or a 626 would work for a Protege Sedan.

mopho November-16th-2002 11:04 PM

I wish ALL the doors had their own switch for the frickin doors!

They do! all she has to do is push the button by her shoulder down on the door and only her door will lock. It works for the back doors too

I hate those auto locks, they drive me crazy, especially in American cars where they don't auto unlock! I have always felt they could be a problem in an accident, locking you in the car. I can see where women could feel safer-protection from car jacking

Now that's the answer I have been looking for. Do the MPV stalks look the same as the Pro5 or is it terribly different? did you actually install it your car?

I want to know this as well. I'd really love to have variable intermittent wipers... one of the few complaints I have with this car.

Please keep us posted! :)

Thanks,
Jim

Ok, just cross referenced some parts. The MPV and Tribute wiper control stalks will bolt on directly to the P5's hub. You don't need to get the light control stalk.

As for the Millenia's, everything is different, so no, it won't fit. Neither will the 626's it seems. What I do know is the European 626's should work. Anyone from Europe care to find out the part number for that one piece?

Thanks much, brother!!

agarven November-17th-2002 07:49 AM

I find it very annoying how there is now variable intermittent wiper adjustment on my P5. I also have a fully loaded 2002 Civic and it doesn't have one either! Seems like it would be a fairly inexpensive option to put on the car, so I'm not sure why they didn' put it on.

So, if a person had non P5 pro, could they still use the one from the MPV and just deal with the extra control for the rear wiper doing nothing? Seems like a small annoyance that does not outweigh having the variable intermittents.

Now I need to get some part numbers and get these things.

Rider69 November-18th-2002 11:20 AM

I forgot about this thread. As far as my P5, I did actually swap the stalk/module to make sure it all worked fine and it worked great. I put the original back in so that I can keep the variable ones in the MPV. I will get a new stalk/module from the dealer one day.

mopho November-18th-2002 11:35 AM

Thanks you VERY much

Rider,
is the module integral with the stalk or is there a second unit that also needs to be moved over (or purchased as the case may be).

thanks!

and as the answer was sufficiently authoritative, I decided that maybe this was still an open question. Hence the person that actually tried it can fill me in completely... right? of course if you are now sure of the answer then I can also take that as a complete response.

I ordered mine today.... around $75 my cost. A bit $$$, but worth it to me.

Thanks much,
Jim

Rider69 November-18th-2002 07:26 PM

It is all one piece. Just order the new wiper stalk and the module is already attached to it. Just remove the old pice and plop in the new one. Piece of cake. Good luck to you all.

MackDaddy, If you can get me one for $75 (plus a small finders fee of course:rolleyes:) I can send you the $$ prior to purchase. PM or email me if interested.

Let me get mine first

And make sure my buddy ordered the right thing (although I did give him the PN listed above.) He said ~$75-80, plus I have to pay tax.

I'll get you one if you really want. Send me an email jmackenz@insight.rr.com so I don't forget. Might take me a week or so, but I'd be more than happy to get ya one. :D

EZ as 123 November-19th-2002 08:57 PM

the MP5 manual says it comes standard with "INT" wipers but you CANNOT adjust the speed

Rider69 November-19th-2002 09:41 PM

That is what we are discussing. The ability to adjust the speed. The wiper module from an MPV will allow adjustable speed on the intermittent wipers in the P5.

Intermittent wipers without variable? THat doesnt even deserve to be classified as being intermittent.. What were the mazda engineers smoking?

I should get mine this week... keep ya'll posted. :D

Mazda engineers were obviously smoking crack, as the OE setup should have been fazed out long, long ago.

It is so silly that Mazda didn't put that in the car in the first place. How much did it cost for the module?

You're right, it's absolute crap this wasn't on the car to begin with.

Cost me ~$76 out the door. List was $108+!!! Not a bargin, but I'm going to be glad I did it everytime it rains, that's a fact. :D

Jim, Could you get one for me too. For those guys that are wondering this is a good deal, I just called a local dealer and they wanted $118.40 + Tax! I'll send you an email as well.

Thanks!

bdr529 November-20th-2002 06:54 PM

Does the sedan use the same one?

JJB November-20th-2002 07:08 PM

I ordered mine from www.mazdastuff.com for $76.00 plus $5.00 S/H... my dealer wanted over $100 for the module. Should be here next week.

Here's a recap of my conversation with the parts guy at the dealership...

"I would like to order a Mazda part"
"What car do you have?"
"I have a Protege5, but I also have the part number."
"What is it?"
"GE6V-66-128"
"OK, one minute"
"OK"
"That part is not for a Protege"
"I know, I still want to order it"
"But it's not for your car"
"I know, I still want it"
"We can't order it if it's not for your car"
"But it doesn't matter what car it's for, I still want it"
"But it doesn't go in the car you have"
"Oohh... you wanted to know what car I am putting this in... my GFs MPV"
"Oh, OK then we can order it"

the I heard the price and decided to drop a line to the folks at MazdaStuff. A much better deal and I did not have the explain why I wanted the part :)

Hey brother,

It sounds like JJB's plan is best for you. I can't get it for you any cheaper. Give Mazdastuff a try first. If that doesn't pan out, let me know.

Ordering from MazdaStuff never crossed my mind, thanks for sharing, I just sent them an email, we will see what happens.

That conversion with your parts department is some funny/all too true/sad stuff, sounds all too familiar.

Ah crap... I just checked my e-mail and I did not get the part for $76, it "costs $79, plus $5 shipping by UPS ground".

Sorry for the bad info.

Amen... I couldn't believe it when the guy told me the price on the phone. How they can charge $118, when someone elses dealer said list was $108 is beyond me. I'll be checking out MazdaStuff.com first for all my parts needs from here on out.

They do seem fair on price. Hope all goes well! :)
