The Mazda6 hatchback is by far the best looking of the Mazda6's

the lines just flow soo much better the sedan looks a little ackward around back

if I had the $$ I think I would wait for the Mazda6 hatch or maybe even get the wagon

You should check that out. It talks about a Turboed version of the Mazda6 coming in at 250bhp using the 2.3L engine and having AWD.

Mazda "unveiled" an MPS version of the 626 at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show. It was powered by a twin-turbo 2.5L V6 with 280hp and more torque than you can shake a stick at. It also had all-wheel drive. It was never produced, though. Here's a pic:

I like the way the P5 look better then the 6 wagon. To me the P5 looks sportier not so much a station wagon like the 6.

2) I am guessing that by the time you are done, the price will be $28-30k. Especially when you look at the class of cars it will be competing with. Maybe someone heard different, but I'd be surprised if it is cheaper than that. (at the least it will be $26k)
Mazda has said pricing of the 6 will be very similar to the current 626. Expect pricing to be in the $18k-$22k price range. This was published in the Road and Track preview drive. Mazda can't afford to price their cars much higher than the competition. The 6's competitors will be Accord, Camry, Altima, Galant, Taurus, Malibu, etc. The new 6 is smaller than the Camry, Taurus, Malibu, and Altima. It is approximately the same size as the current Accord. The new Altima has a price range of $16.6k-$22.6k and has way more room and way more power from either engine. If Mazda were to charge $4k more than the Altima, why would anyone buy the 6? The RX-8 is supposed to start around $26k!

Base MSRP for the 3.5 SE is $22,649 plus destination. If you are referring to a fully loaded Altima with leather, auto, Xenon headlights, moonroof, etc., try about $29k! We like to refer to the Pro5 as a $17k car. However, a fully loaded Protege5 is $21,794!! Ouch!!! Our local dealership is selling fully loaded 626 ES-V6's with V6, auto, leather, Bose 6-CD, cassette, moonroof, ABS, traction control, power seat, etc. for $19,999!

I guess it depends on what is more important to YOU. If you want a larger car that doesn't handle as well and has a cheezy interior, then by all means, get the Altima.

If you want a sweet-looking, good handling car that will put a grin on your face everytime you drive, then I'd bet on the 6 (or better yet, the RX-8).

In my experience, every Mazda I've driven has been an exceptionally good handler....better than what the competition offers.

Just my opinion.

Oh, I definitely agree with you! I was just pointing out what a disaster the 6 would be if Mazda charged close to $30k for it. Personally, I will be taking a very close look at the RX-8. After having owned an RX-7, no piston engine out there can even come close to the smoothness and power delivery of a rotary engine. My Protege felt like I was driving an early diesel compared to the RX-7 I was trading in...

Sadly, it is true that most North American drivers prefer a softer ride to good handling

So, to them, $30k for any Mazda, no matter how well it drives, would be too much...yet they'll pay $$$ for a damned Buick!

The Mazda 3 is just a new name for the next Protege. The history of the Protege in the US goes back to the mid-70's and the GLC. In the 80's, Mazda renamed the line 323, and in 1990 they went to Protege. For 2004, the name moves to Mazda 3.

The new Mazda 3 will share a totally new platform with the 2004 Ford Focus. Engines will be shared as well... the base engine will be a 2.0L DOHC I4. It is unknown whether this will be the current 2.0L, the Zetec 2.0L, or the new Duratec 2.0L. The optional engine will be the new 160hp 2.3L DOHC I4 with Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT). This engine has already been introduced in the Ford Ranger and Mazda Truck (no longer called B-series), although in a different state of tune. We will see the car version of this engine in the base model Mazda 6 this summer.
